CLEVELAND -- The Ohio Supreme Court ruled September 6, 2001, that the method of funding public schools is constitutional, and removed itself from further participation in the state's school funding controversy. Jonathan Entin, professor of constitutional law and political science at Case Western Reserve University, believes that the Supreme Court "blinked in the face of increasing pressure from the legislature."
Entin says the plaintiffs, or a similar group, will be back in court in a few years to get the state to change the basic way it funds public schools. "In contrast to states such as Michigan, there is no evidence that the Ohio legislature has tried to systematically re-think the way the state funds public schools," Entin says.
