CLEVELAND -- Case Western Reserve University will host classes for OhioDance's 25th Anniversary Festival when it comes to Cleveland October 18-20 for its annual celebration of dance. The three-day event will focus on dance education for dance and non-dance educators, as well as master classes and workshops in a wide range of dance forms and techniques for dancers of all levels. Two festival showcases will take place at Cuyahoga Community College.
The festival opens Thursday, October 18 with Dance Education Day. Workshops throughout the day will explore a variety of topics from ways dance can stem youth violence, getting elementary students up and moving to dance, creative dances for young children, to creative dance and improvisation for older children.
Dance Education Day concludes at 5 p.m. with a round table discussion about local, state, and national dance education initiatives. Loren Bucek, an OhioDance education consultant, will moderate the discussion.
The Friday schedule includes a wide spectrum of classes and workshops, including Dalcroze eurhythmics, ballet, modern, Pilates exercises, Hispanic folk dances, beginning Flamenco, modern technique, hip hop jazz, Nigerian dance, popular salsa, contemporary African-based modern dance, baroque ballet, and musical theater jazz.
Technique and dance classes continue throughout the day Saturday, October 20, starting at 9:15 a.m. Some of the topics for exploration during Saturday's workshops are advanced lyrical jazz, Iyengar Yoga, the Graham technique, Hungarian dance, advanced modern dance, Gyrokinesis(tm), swing, Afro-Caribbean, rhythm tap, Capoeira, and Butoh improvisation. The day also includes a variety of technique classes.
The Young Artists Showcase is the first of two showcases to take place during the festival. The event begins at 8 p.m. Friday, October 19 at the Mainstage Theater at the Metro Campus of Cuyahoga Community College. The performance will feature dancers from the Central Ohio Youth Ballet, Factory Street Studio, Royal School of Ballet, Fort Hayes Performing Arts High School, Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet, and the Great Lakes Festival Ballet.
The festival concludes with the Choreographers Showcase at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 20. It is also at the Mainstage Theater at Metro Tri-C campus. Works featured will be by choreographers Jovita Weibel, Corinne Imberski, Gayle Parseghian, Brian Murphy, Natalie Marrone, Rosalind Pierson, Danah Bella, Jose Luis Bustamante (performed by the Repertory Project), Sarah Morrison, Chung-Fu Chang, Brianne Schenkel, Marina Walchli, and Kristina Isabelle.
