CWRU training will prep teachers for polar adventure

CLEVELAND -- Teachers around Northeast Ohio will have the opportunity to take their classes on a chilly adventure to the polar regions of the Earth through explorer Robert Ballard's "JASON XIII: Frozen Worlds."

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education in Case Western Reserve University's College of Arts and Sciences will host three training workshops for elementary and middle school teachers to acquaint and prepare them with classroom activities that will culminate in Ballard's expedition January 28 through February 8.

Trained teachers and their students will attend live broadcasts in CWRU's Ford Auditorium, 11000 Euclid Avenue, where they will have interactive experience with Ballard and other researchers on location in Alaska through the use of Super Bowl broadcasting technology.

Training sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, August 14 at Polaris Career Center, 7285 Old Oak Boulevard in Middleburg Heights, and two Saturdays -- September 29 and October 27 -- at CWRU. During the training, teachers will receive an introduction to the JASON program and learn how to include the interdisciplinary materials and activities that center around the theme of "Frozen Worlds" into the classroom.

Letty Maxwell, a Willoughby resident and a science teacher at Orchard School in Cleveland, also will attend and talk about the JASON experience. The JASON program sent Maxwell to Alaska from July 22-27 to have a first-hand polar adventure and view glaciers, coastal shores, cultural traditions, and the state's climate and geology. Last year, Maxwell also was among a group of selected teachers to receive special training for the JASON adventure to Hawaii.

Registration is required for the training. For registration information, call Kathryn Kwiatkowski, CWRU's JASON project director, at 216-368-5075.
