CLEVELAND -- East, west, north, and south of Cleveland -- all directions point the way to learning through classes and travel experiences, offered by Case Western Reserve University's Office of Continuing Education. Registration is open now for fall semester classes in the Off-Campus Studies Program, Senior Scholars Program, Scholars on the Circle, Creative Writing Program, Shaw Festival Tour, and Grazella Shepherd Lecture Day.

The fall program includes:

  • Off-Campus Studies presents more than 80 class offerings in the areas of history, political science, literature, music, philosophy, and science for those interested in lively discussions, and interesting readings, but no written homework assignments. The university-level, non-degree courses meet in local libraries, churches, and communities centers.
  • Senior Scholars offers three non-degree courses on specific topics each semester. This fall, the scholars will study Germany since 1945, aspects of literacy and James Boswell's portrayal of Samuel Johnson, and the American Civil Justice System. All classes meet at the College Club of Cleveland, 2348 Overlook Road in Cleveland Heights.
  • Scholars on the Circle, a cooperative effort between CWRU's Continuing Education and University Circle organizations, will host two study classes. "The Faust Legend in Music" explores how Faust was the inspiration of works by great composers, and "The Symphonies of Gustav Mahler" surveys Mahler's symphonic works against their historical and biographical background to develop a picture of this composer as an extraordinary human being and composer.
  • The Creative Writing Program offers the popular "Intuitive Expression" class taught by Ted Henry, WEWS TV5 news anchor, as well as a poetry workshop and "Art of the Personal Essay" by Linda Tuthill.

Programs sponsored by the Association for Continuing Education of CWRU are:

  • The Shaw Festival Tour on October 18-19 is open to ACE members. The tour will include two plays -- Millionairess by George Bernard Shaw and The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens. Membership to ACE is $15 for a general membership, $10 for those under 30 years or over 65, and $25 or more for patrons.
  • The Grazella Shepherd Lecture Day will explore the theme "From Disintegration to Renewal: Croatia and Serbia." The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, October 15 at the Cleveland Play House Club, 8501 Carnegie Avenue.

Registration and fees are required for all activities. For a catalogue or information, call 216-368-2090.
