Case creates new center for community partnerships, appoints director

CLEVELAND—In order to build more and stronger relationships with University Circle and Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University has created a new Center for Community Partnerships to be directed by Jacklyn J. Chisholm, the University's newly appointed associate vice president for community partnerships.

Formerly the director of Case's Office for Community Partnerships, Chisholm assumed her new duties September 1.

In her new position, Chisholm will be responsible for creating a Center with internal and external visibility which will facilitate interactions between the University with community groups and institutions in the interest of furthering the core missions of education and research. The Center will develop infrastructure to serve the University's activities which serve and interact with the community, and will provide a forum for enhancing and allocating resources which promote mutually beneficial relationships.

"Working with the community is a top priority of this University, and the topic of my Inaugural symposium in January," said Case President Edward M. Hundert. "Dr. Chisholm's extraordinary skills and talents are a great gift to the institution. The creation of this Center will help us to be more effective and to build more and stronger relationships."

Chisholm will report to Susan B. Shurin, Vice President and Secretary of the Corporation.

"Working with Dr. Chisholm has been an extremely exciting and stimulating experience," Shurin said. "I am simply thrilled at the prospect of what this office will be able to accomplish for Cleveland and Ohio, and am honored to be able to participate in the process."

Since March 1993, Chisholm has served as the first Director of the Office of Community Relations at Case Western Reserve University. In this capacity, she has been responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy that seeks to establish positive and productive relationships with local government, business and community representatives and organizations, and promotes mutually beneficial partnerships and facilitates internal and community-university communications in order to support community building efforts and to promote a culture of community service.

She has been a key member of the Supplier Diversity Initiative Council. The work of the SDIC has received Ohio Gov. Bob Taft's 2003 Minority Business Development Recognition Award, the Hispanic Business Association Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for Ohio's Corporate Community Relations Award and the Cleveland NAACP's Freedom Award.

From 1990 to 1993, Chisholm served in the Office of Minority Programs as its first Coordinator of Recruitment and Placement, where she spearheaded a new retention initiative entitled the Minority Scholars Program (MSP). From 1988 to 1990, Chisholm served as Admission Counselor and Co-Coordinator of Minority Recruitment in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Chisholm has served on a number of boards, including TRIO Upward Bound/Talent Search, Antioch Development Corporation and the CWRU Women's Initiative for Leadership and Learning.

She holds three degrees from Case Western Reserve University: a B.A. in Medical Anthropology, an M.A. in Psychological Anthropology, and a Ph.D. in Psychological Anthropology with an emphasis on Educational Anthropology.

In the Executive Training Program of the May Corporation, Chisholm acquired experience in marketing, budgeting, business forecasting, market research, stock distribution and allocation, vendor negotiations, customer relations and creative problem solving.

Chisholm was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She currently lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio, with her husband Robert and her daughters Robin and Jennifer.
