JUNE 2008 UPDATE

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the end of the month Congress adjourned for a week-long Independence Day recess after approving the FY2008 supplemental appropriations bill, starting work on FY09 appropriations measures, and extending, yet again, the current Higher Education Act.

Appropriations and Budget –Summaries of the FY2008 supplemental appropriations bill and the FY2009 budget resolution and a status report on FY09 funding measures. 

Health and Human Services – The FDA requests additional funding for food and drug inspection.

Higher Education –HEA Reauthorization remains unresolved

Homeland Security –– Recent developments on visa issues and classification of “sensitive but unclassified” information. 

Immigration – A report that US Consulates are charging foreign students for phone calls and e-mail responses related to visa applications.

Intellectual Property – Orphan Works are addressed in Congressional legislation.

NASA – An update on agency reauthorization. 

National Institutes of Health – Peer review process is being “reviewed.” 

Research – Recent developments related to conflict of interest and human subjects and an announcement by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a new health care disparities initiative.

Taxes – The Senate tries to extend expired and/or expiring tax provisions but obstacles remain. 

Odds and Ends – Miscellaneous items of interest. 

STATE OF OHIO

Legislation -Reports on the Jobs Stimulus, Capital Budget and Great Lakes Compact legislation.

Other States – Activities in Louisiana and Massachusetts of interest to Ohioans.
