UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR

OVERRIDES AND PERMISSIONS

Some courses have limits on the number of students which may enroll in the course, which are set by the academic departments. Other courses require permission from the instructor(s) or from the department offering the course. Students may register for closed or permission-required courses only by obtaining an official override or permission from instructor(s) or from the departments offering the course. Permissions and overrides may be granted through SIS. An override or a permission alone is not sufficient for registration and issuance of a permission or override does not register a student for that course.

Overrides for Closed Courses

If the course has reached its enrollment limit and the instructor wishes to allow further registrations, an override is required prior to registration. See the status of the course on the Schedule of Classes. A blue square represents a closed course. Overrides are necessary for these courses once the course has reached its enrollment limit (seen on the Class Detail). If you are registering using SIS and you get the message that a course is closed, it has reached its enrollment limit, and you will need an override in order to register for the course.

Permissions

Sometimes departments want to more closely control enrollment in a specific course. In order to do that, the course is flagged in the student information system so that a student cannot register without departmental or instructor permission. This permission is granted through SIS. A permission is required if the statement "Instructor Consent Required" or "Department Consent Required" appears in the Class Detail on the Schedule of Classes. Students not meeting the prerequisite or corequisite required by a course may also request to be granted permission to register by the instructor of the course.

Requisites Not Met

Some departments choose to enforce requisites for courses in their departments. Such courses are flagged in the student information system so that a student cannot register if they have not met the requisite. Required requisites for a course can be found in the Class Detail on the Schedule of Classes. Students not meeting the prerequisite or corequisite required by a course may also request to be granted permission to register by the instructor of the course.
