Click it or Kick it:
The Price of Pleasure: Pornography, Sexuality, and Relationships
(film)

Each fall, the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women at Case Western Reserve University sponsors their annual Project on Men and Gender (PMG). PMG features programs and workshops that explore masculinity, men’s violence, gender stereotypes, and healthy relationships in the interest of reducing violence against women.

This year’s PMG program will feature a film screening of The Price of Pleasure: Pornography, Sexuality, and Relationships. The Price of Pleasure features interviews with scholars of mass media, economics, psychology, writers on pornography and popular culture, as well as producers and performers from the pornography industry.

The movie will be followed by discussion and a Q & A with Dr. Robert Jensen, Professor at the University of Texas. Dr. Jensen served as a consultant on the movie and serves on the faculty at the School of Journalism at the University of Texas. Dr. Jensen is also the author of The Price of Pleasure: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. Dr. Jensen has been an activist in the feminist movement against sexual violence and the exploitation of the commercial sex industry.

Secondary appointment in the Center of Clinical Investigation in the Department of General Medical Sciences

President, Women Faculty of the School of Medicine

Living the Dream: A Sleep Specialist’s Perspective

Dr. Mehra will discuss the underpinnings of her interest and research pursuits in exploring mechanisms of sleep disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease. She will also discuss balancing the multipronged roles of an academician: clinician, educator and researcher. She will describe her position as Director of the Adult Sleep Disorders Center and the instrumental role she has played in rebuilding this program. In relation to her work, Dr. Mehra will also discuss her experience of leading the Women Faculty of the School of Medicine organization.

Speaking personally, in line with the “How She Does It” component of the Spotlight Series, Dr. Mehra will share her life experience of decision-making along the course of her career and personal paths highlighting the utility of perseverance and striving to achieve life balance.

In accordance with the Spotlight Series tradition, the presentation will be informative and accessible to a broad, interested audience not necessarily in the speaker’s field of discipline.

About Dr. Mehra
The focus of Dr. Mehra’s research involves identification of specific pathways of oxidative stress implicated in the pathogenesis of the sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease relationship as well as exploring sleep disordered breathing-arrhythmia associations. Dr. Mehra received her B.S./M.D. from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Master of Science in Clinical Research in Epidemiology and Biostatistics through the Clinical Research Scholars Program at Case Western Reserve University. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center and clinical Fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and then enrolled in a Sleep Medicine Neurobiology and Epidemiology research fellowship for 2 years. She has received numerous awards for her work and is the author of over 35 publications and book chapters, and is a member of multiple professional organizations. She and her husband, Dr. Thomas Gildea, are the proud parents of their 2-year old son, Rohan.

The Spotlight Lecture Series, begun in 1989, is funded by the Mather Centennial Endowment Fund generously provided by the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association.

WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD?
Op-Ed Project Trainings November 16th & 17th, 2009

The Flora Stone Mather Center for Women, The ACES+ Program and the Office of the Provost are hosting 2 training sessions with The OpEd Project, an innovative program to expand public debate and increase the voice of women thought leaders.

The first seminar will be held
at the School of Law
on November 16th from 10 am to 4 pm

This is open to all women faculty members and senior administrators. Catherine Orenstein, founder and director of the OpEd Project will lead the seminar.

This session is limited to 20 people and costs $150 to attend. If you are interested in attending please contact Prof. Laura McNally at the School of Law at laura.mcnally@case.edu or 368-5136.

The second seminar, held in two sessions at Dively on November 16th & 17th from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, is open to the public, women only.

Connie Schultz Maura Casey
Connie Shultz Maura Casey

This seminar will be co-led by Connie Shultz, a Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist for The Plain Dealer, and Maura Casey, an award-winning columnist and editor who left the Editorial Board of the New York Times in 2009.

This session is limited to 20 people and costs $300 to attend. The Op-Ed Project provides scholarships to 40% of participants in every seminar.

To register and to view the scholarship policy visit: www.theopedproject.org.

The OpEd Project’s highly interactive and energetic seminar will push you to hone the ideas and causes that you care about, and write about them to make a difference. We will explore the source of credibility and how to establish it quickly; the patterns and elements of a powerful argument; the difference between being “right” and being effective; how to preach beyond the choir, how to think bigger about what we know, and how to make a bigger impact on the world.

Time permitting, we will also develop these concepts into concrete op-eds or op-ed drafts for each participant; explore strategies for increasing impact; discuss etiquette and strategies for pitching and how to build relationships with editors and publishers.

Why should you attend: The OpEd Project’s position is not that women need our help, but just the opposite: we think public debate needs women. Our national conversation currently reproduces the voices and opinions of only a small fraction of society: 85% male. Worse among academics: a 2008 Rutgers University study found that 97% of op-eds by scholars in the Wall Street Journal are written by men. What is the cost to society when half of the nation’s best minds and best ideas – women’s minds and women’s ideas – are missing?

The nation’s key opinion forums feed all other media and drive thought leadership in America. The op-ed pages and commentary forums of major media outlets – whether print, online, or broadcast – are followed by diplomats, business-people, scholars, and those in the highest levels of government. They can sway public opinion and change the world. And these forums are open to all of us – including those without publishing experience.

Prevent Sexual Violence...on our campuses

The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence (focusing on sexual assault and rape) and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts. National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC)
