Faculty members of all colleges and schools at CWRU are invited
to apply to become Learning Fellows during the Fall 2009 semester.
This will be the eleventh in the series that began in Spring 2003.
The Fellowships are for Case faculty members who want to meet
with faculty from across the university and explore ideas on
how people learn and how those ideas can be applied in the classroom
to improve teaching.
The response of previous participants has been overwhelmingly
positive, with many saying that the discussions about learning
with faculty from across the university were enjoyable and tremendously
valuable to them in their work.
The structure of the program is similar to that of a semester-long,
seminar-type course in which faculty discuss the research literature
on learning, and how that knowledge can be translated into practical
strategies to enhance student learning.
In the Fall 2009 semester, meetings will occur once
a week on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00pm for every week of the regular semester,
beginning on August 26 and ending on December 2. Lunch will
be provided at each session.
Class meetings will consist of, among other things, the following
features: discussions of learning theory; creating more interactive
large and small classes; aligning course goals, teaching methods
and assessments; cooperative learning; improving assessment
methods; creating better classroom rapport with and among students;
enhancing student motivation; developing general teaching and
class management skills; dealing with ethical issues; and gender
and ethnicity implications of teaching strategies.
Enrollment in the program implies a commitment by the faculty
member to attend and participate in all the weekly sessions,
submit weekly journals, participate in program evaluations,
and complete other assignments as may be required. Upon successfully completing the program as indicated,
a grant of $2,500 will be created for each faculty member to be used at
their discretion for academic purposes during the fiscal year July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011.
Faculty members of all colleges and schools at CWRU (whether tenure track or non-tenure track) are invited
to apply to become Fellows but preference in selection will be given to those who have an expectation of a
reasonably long-term, multi-year relationship with the university.
The application should consist of a very brief (one
page) bio-sketch, and a cover letter indicating why you are
interested in the Fellowship. Applications (electronic or hard
copy) should be received at the UCITE office by Monday, July 6, 2009.
Inquiries should be directed to the UCITE
office (ucite@case.edu, 368-1224).
