As we reaffirm the University's commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action, I would like to emphasize again that, rather than being content with an acknowledgement of the tenets of equal opportunity and affirmative action and with the adherence to the relevant policies, I would like to challenge us all to adopt an outlook on diversity that surpasses minimal expectations. We need continually to strive to maintain an institutional culture that is inclusive not exclusive, that is welcoming not distancing. Our vision for CWRU a destination university for students, faculty, and staff requires that we consistently promote and maintain an environment that is exemplary for a society that is among the most diverse on earth.
Please know that we have placed a high priority on improving CWRU's position with regard to equal opportunity, affirmative
action, and campus diversity. We have placed emphasis on increasing the percentage of women, African American and Latino faculty at all levels. Increased diversity of all kinds among undergraduate students is an important objective for our new Vice Provost for Enrollment. In las year's statement greater diversity in executive staff positions was another important goal, and we have been successful in increasing diversity at that level. We reject the unsupported claim that merit and diversity are enemies. We must be energetic in identifying and recruiiting highly qualified candidates from an increasingly broad range of backgrounds.
As we collectively consider a vision for the institution's future, we must also consider how we can build a truly just and humane University community, one within which a diverse population can and will thrive. Our campus community is enriched when we accept and draw on the talents and experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds. I hope you share my expectations for progress on diversity, and my commitmen to initiatives to promote that progress, as we move CWRU forward.
