The Faculty Diversity Officer | The Manager of Faculty Diversity and Development

The Faculty Diversity Officer

The Faculty Diversity Officer is housed within Case's Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and reports directly to the Office of the Provost and President. She serves as a facilitator for addressing faculty diversity issues, particularly relating to recruitment, employment, and other areas related to faculty duties. She serves as the faculty affirmative action officer, investigates allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination (gender, sexual orientation, racial, and ADA.)

All members of the Case community are obligated to report first-hand reports of sexual harassment that are brought to their attention, to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. This office is obligated to investigate such concerns to the extent possible. If a faculty member brings a complaint, he/she has available two forms of investigation from which to choose.

Informal: The Faculty Diversity Officer will interview the parties involved (and others as appropriate) and attempt to mediate a resolution. An informal review may be followed by a formal review, at your request.

Formal: A formal review is conducted outside the Office of Equal Opportunity through the appropriate Faculty Senate Committee (for non-sexual harassment discrimination) or the Sexual Harassment Hearing Panel (for sexual harassment claims). If it is determined a violation has occurred, sanctions for non-sexual harassment discrimination claims are based on the nature and severity of the offense and the extent of the findings. In general, sanctions include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following: public apologies, public reprimands, participation in educational or counseling sessions, written warnings or letters of reprimand. In addition, faculty and staff may face suspension without pay, denial of a promotion or pay raise, demotion, and termination for cause. Students may also be suspended from the University, from University Housing or selected activities or organizations, placed on probation or expelled from the University.

If you are faculty and need accommodation for a disability and can verify your disability with appropriate documentation, the Faculty Diversity Officer will assist in coordinating appropriate reasonable accommodation.

If you need mediation of departmental/college/school issues or have a complaint that is not in the realm of unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment, you may contact the chair of your department, the Dean of your School, the chair of the Faculty Senate Personnel Committee, or the Faculty Diversity Officer for assistance.

Confidentiality:

The Faculty Diversity Officer attempts to treat all information respectfully and with appropriate discretion, however, it is important to understand that confidentiality cannot be guaranteed and that, for effective investigations or mediations, information from interviews may be shared with parties involved in the investigation or with others as appropriate.

All parties interviewed in Office of Equal Opportunity investigations are expected to keep conversations from those investigations or mediations confidential, and are expected not to disclose information from these conversations with other parties.

Retaliation:

Retaliation for disclosure of information to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity is prohibited by Case policy. If you feel you have been retaliated against due to a complaint made to this Office, please contact the Office immediately (216) 368-8877.

The Manager of Faculty Diversity and Development

The Manager of Faculty Diversity and Development, Amanda Shaffer, is housed within Case's Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and reports directly to the Faculty Diversity Officer. She works with faculty search committees, department chairs and deans to increase the diversity of the faculty candidate pools and eliminate subtle bias from the process. She helps committees navigate government regulations and the university guidelines by providing customized resources, information, and suggestions to ensure the best candidates are applying to Case.
