In March 2002, Information Technology Services (ITS) committed to the development of a Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) based on Web Services standards from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). As IT demands increase within the organization, this committment was made to allow more flexibility to align services, greater resource access to decision makers, educators and learners, extension of legecy services, development of new services through recombination and lower overall total cost of ownership (TCO) of IT resources to the university. The initial outcome of that commitment has been the enterprise portal known as MyCase which went into production in August 2003.
The Portal Project Team, also known as the Advanced Technologies Prototyping and Integration group works closely with CaseLabs, the high-performance computing and interdisciplinary research center located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University and the technology transfer company; CampuEAI. The group practices the principles of Iterative Rapid Application Development (IRAD) and provides technical support and advice to other IT projects as those groups bring their services into the SOA infrastructure and to their customers through the campus portal environment.
