Eyes On Trivia Club

Among the many diverse clubs and organizations this campus holds, there is one that specializes in finding, and answering, the most trivial of questions. They meet weekly and fire off question after question, honing the velocity of their buzzer fingers.

This is the CWRU College Trivia Club. Currently its membership numbers 10 fact-laden trivia team members. These undergraduate students have indicated a desire to fill their minds and, as stated in their charter, the CWRU campus with "useless, trivial knowledge."

According to Anthony de Jesus, a junior chemical engineering major and treasurer of the club, there are two parts to their means of accomplishing this task: hosting and competing in intermural and collegiate trivia tournaments.

The team practices weekly in preparation for competitions, but the amount of practice is determined individually by each student according to their interest.

Trivia teams are composed of four members. On average, the club goes to three tournaments a semester. In addition, they attend two national tournaments in the spring. Trivia club will also be participating in competitions hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University and Michigan State.

"Competing in trivia tournaments is fun," said Travis Simpkins, a sophomore electrical engineering major, "and it's something I can do with all the useless information I know." The second part of the club's role involves hosting tournaments. They hold both high school and college level tournaments on campus. This involves not only setting up and gathering participants, but also writing the questions. The first competition CWRU Trivia Club is holding this year is the College Celebrity Shoot on October 4.

High school tournaments will be sponsored throughout the year starting with the High School Celebrity Shoot on October 28. The pretigious PACE National Scholastics Championship, a national high school chamionship, is scheduled to be held on campus June 18 through 20.

"We definitely need lots of help hosting the tournaments," said Michael Hake, a senior biochemistry major and president of the club. "We're always looking for more members."

Anyone interested in participating in the Trivia Club is invited to the weekly meetings in the lobby of Sears Library every Sunday at 1:00. Students can also visit the club's web page at http://www.cwru.edu/orgs/trivia/index.html, or email de Jesus at ard@po.cwru.edu.
