High School Quiz Bowl Team Web Page Directory (and Review)
A web page for each high school team should not only reflect the school but also the involvement and character of that team in competition and outside. To that end, I am listing all the "homepages" for various high school academic competition teams with my own ranking and commentary to improve everyone's homepages for the sake of the high school competition community. (You can also see the Academic Decathlon Team Web Page Directory and Review.)
Each web site is reviewed for content, organization, aesthetics, and information on each school program. The web pages are listed in alphabetical order by school. All criticisms are meant to be taken constructively or tongue-in-cheek.
I realize some of you are probably doing a lot of construction, so let's hope you will be ready for my next series of grades when classes resume next semester. This includes "surprise inspections" whenever I have the time to do them.
If you'd like your web page included and reviewed (or better yet, see a rival's web page potentially get trashed), send requests to Emil Thomas Chuck. I'll try to get around to it when I have time.
Last updated: 02/20/2001 8:22:15 PM. 164 teams' pages reviewed, including dead links removed with this update.
Class A (Champions)
These teams have a lot to say about themselves and their place in the high school quiz bowl world. With lots of information, I usually find each site very interesting and fascinating regarding information about the current team, its intended schedule of tournaments, and its past history. Basically, it approaches the amount of comprehensiveness of information that I have come to do for the College Trivia Club of Case Western Reserve University.
- Bartlett TN
- Decent color scheme, and frequent updates. Not a bad site. Just don't underline & italicize championship placements in your table of results, please. (A better highlighting scheme would be to change the background color of that row.) You also need to update the page.
- Burlington VT
- 12/05/2000: Reorganization of the web site has made this site even more aesthetically pleasing than before. Information is "just the right size" for one's eyes to handle.
- Eleanor Roosevelt MD
- Compliment: Forgiving the mandatory Geocities pop-up ad, it has the most comprehensive site on the DC-area "It's Academic" competition for the current season. At least they list various distinguished alumni, which is a lot more than some college teams do. If your team doesn't have a constitution as detailed as theirs, you should.
Criticism: I really don't like using tables to track the tournament; too much potential for mis-tabling a row.
9/22/99 Update: Okay, so they got rid of their cumbersome table, and they've added more pictures of their TV team and Mac Magarry. We just need cleaner pictures of the group at some point (hint).
- Governor's School for Government and International Studies VA
- 12/05/2000: Layout is still quite good, and lots of content to roam around and learn about the team and the events the team organizes.
Class B (Make the Playoffs)
These teams have good web sites with limited information about the current team or tournaments each program intends to compete in. Sometimes the information gets to be a bit out of date. Each site contains useful information about each team, but not enough to give them Class A status.
- Bald Knob AR
- Ooo... a high school quiz bowl team lexicon that actually has a section on "sex." You may want to change the Title of your pages from "New Page 1", "New Page 2", and so on. When it says, "Do Not Enter", they're not kidding; you'll stay stuck in there for a long time. (I had to reboot a computer once to get out!)
- Briarcrest Christian Academy TN
- Someone has invested way too much in web design. Seriously though, check out this page. They don't need more bonus points for making Cracker Barrel the official restaurant for their team, do they? They might want to be more vigilant in updating their web pages though.
- Bromfield Academy MA
- The mystery "16" on the bottom left corner of the page stands for... oh who knows. Basically, why is everything about your team stuck on one page?
- Brownsburg IN
- Much better organized, but what happened to all the photographs?
- Crooksville OH
- First off, it would be nice to know where you are and how to contact you; put email addresses of individual members with the members page (just a suggestion). The schedule page has information, but I'm wondering why you can't just put that information in HTML rather than as an image. Scores and stats page needs a bit of aesthetic tweaking as well.
- Fenwick IL
- 11/22/2000 update: Hey, there's actually some interesting information about the team now! The Fenwick Hall of Shame features the various bad answers and questions that the team has experienced over the (two) years... though if you could recall what the questions were that resulted in such uproariously funny answers, that would be more entertaining. You at least know that I'm watching you now (but note, I don't give +/- modifiers to my grades). Awaiting more pictures, anecdotes, and an explanation of how you play Scholastic Bowl (with links to various IHSSCBA organizations). Just a suggestion.
- Georgetown Day School DC
- So far so good... will continue to review...
- Grand Junction CO
- It's not bad for a start. With a bit more time, you can make the move upwards. There's some trouble me accessing your page on occasion... you shouldn't have a space in your "academic team" directory.
- Irmo SC
- Color of fonts on black make it a bit hard to read. Tournament information is limited to past winners right now, but one can still supply "constant" information on the tournament: game format, number of teams, the actual date of the competition with directions, etc.
- Mount Carmel IL
- Did a good job upgrading their web site.
- Riverdale TN
- What is the deal with the header image (what is that next to that teammate's mouth)? Compliments on the online "tryout test" (even if it is multiple choice), but check on the font sizes. Much potential to be a pretty decent page, provided the updates come often.
- Russellville AL (High School and Middle School teams)
- Very nicely arranged layout, even though there are no pictures of the teams or its past history. I am confused as some pages the links are gold or cyan (Meeting the Teams) and other pages they are blue and purple; on a black sidebar background it makes a difference.
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology VA
- Hey folks!!! We updated our web site!!!
- Walton GA
- 11/22/2000 update: Cute clip-art graphics and comprehensive catalog of pictures. Now all we need is a schedule and some results, and your training will be complete.
- West (Knoxville) TN
- Quite a step up from your old web site, assuming you're the same team. Organize your tournament result data a lot better, please. A regrade will be in order as soon as you fill in the obvious information gaps and tidy up some of those links.
- Wirth Middle School IL
- It's a middle school, not a high school, but with a decent site. A little more information about the team would be nice, as would justifying text into tables for the schedule of the upcoming season.
Class C (At least they play the game)
Each program has a web site saying that the team exists with very limited information about the program. Control over these sites is probably limited and not in the control of student members of the team.
- Cistercian Prep TX
- Basically, it's just Father Gregory's home page, and unfortunately, I'm guessing that's all the memory they'll give him.
- Conant IL
- A little updating is fine, but there's still not much going on with this team that is easily decipherable to the "outside world." "Juniors" are not the same as "Junior Varsity," is it?
- Detroit Country Day MI
Nate Meyvis's site
- It's really more a personal web page than a team web page, but still it's not that bad. I'd like to see more pictures and get a better font size.
- Dwight Eisenhower MI
- It's a nice start, but you should choose a better font to go with that rather bright blue background so I can read it.
- Hampton VA
- A nice picture and one link to results.
- Homewood-Flossmoor IL
- Nice pages here and there, font size control though needed.
- Andrew Jackson LA
- Everything's on one page, including your sample quiz.
- New Trier IL
- Put your sample questions on a separate page, maybe with some more creative styling; then get back to me.
- Northside AR
- It has the problem of putting a lot of info on one page. There seems to be enough space, so break up that page a bit more. Also the background doesn't match the navigating imagemap at all.
- Ottawa-Glandorf OH
- The site looks a bit better but there's still only a bare-bones description of the team and its activities.
- PORTA IL
- Get your results links fixed.
- Staunton IL
- Pictures of team okay, interesting commentary from coach. Needs updating.
- Stevenson IL
- Fairly respectable. Decent lists of top-10 lists. Await word of who will take over the page. Needs updating.
- Vanguard FL
- Not too bad, though I think you have enough space for providing more team info.
- Ysleta TX
- Well, it's a summary page, but it shows signs of life.
Triaged (Cannon Fodder)
Basically put, each of these teams exists. No contact information is available outside the school itself, and there is no information about what each program does. It probably has to do with the fact that for most of these cases, the students and even the coaches probably have no control over the content of these pages at all.
- John Adams (South Bend) IN
- Just a roster and no way to contact anyone there.
- Anacoco LA
- Cute drawing. No info.
- Apopka FL
- Info only.
- Avoyelles LA
- No one's updated this page since 1998. Not too many people seem to have noticed though.
- Baileysville WV
- Just a picture.
- Bath OH
- One page list of members and some description of activities.
- Bethesda-Chevy Chase MD
- Usual info, though it hasn't been updated in a year.
- Brother Martin LA
- Information on how to join the team. Boring.
- Calvert Hall College MD
- A good start... but no updates since 1996-97.
- Carlinville IL
- Snxxx....
- John Carroll MD
- Info only.
- Center Line MI
- Under construction... since last year.
- Central A&M IL
- Well, there's a 1998-99 schedule.
- Clearwater NE
- The last names have been abbreviated to protect the innocent...
- Copiague NY
- Please update... standings since January 1999?
- Cretin-Durham Hall MN
- Frames bad... . Organization of pages needs a bit more work (you need not fit everything about your team on one page with embedded links). The bio page is a bit humorous.
- Damascus MD
- Nice introduction page, but you might need to add a few more things to get out of the basement.
- Davison MI
- The page pretty much covers their activities in Knowledge Master. Come on, we know you do more than just that. What about your old team page?
- Paul Dorman SC
- I suppose you can do less with one page. Don't overexpose your pictures when you scan them in.
- Edison CA
- You cannot multitask a "homework page" and pass it as one devoted to your team.
- Eisenhower OK
- There's no there there.
- Erath LA
- I pity you guys for practicing 2-3 times a week.
- Florien LA
- There are pictures, and there is information. But it's all on one page. Who plays for the team?
11/22/2000: Hey... what happened?
- Gillespie IL
- Is this a picture of the team? I suppose...
- Grundy Center IA
- This is about the best I can find on the team now.
- Halls TN
- Color schemes... please watch those color schemes. Could you also fix your links?
- Hammond MD
- Much like Eleanor Roosevelt's page, they track the Baltimore-level "It's Academic" tournament. However, the change of font sizes is distracting (what did I say about using tables???). Really cute "Cat in the Hat" bg, but again, you don't need to list everything about your team in one page with embedded links.
- Hicksville OH
- Nice picture of the news article. Anything else about yourselves???
- Hildreth NE
- Information about the 1998-99 team (HS and JHS), but that's all.
- James Hubert Blake MD
- Well, there is a schedule and a roster of kids.
- Jefferson (Delphos) OH
- There's some details about their performance last year here.
- Kaplan LA
- Don't get any respect, eh?
- Liberty CO
- There is some life out there with "They came, they saw, they kicked brains and took names." Other than that...
- Liberty-Benton OH
- Info only.
- Limestone IL
- A decent explanation of how the game is played, no updates since 1996-97
- Lincoln-Way IL
- Technically solid, but roster information is protected; decent list of internet links. "Have a great summer"???
- Lincolnview OH
- Another roster
- Little Falls MN
- It's interesting that the city's mayor advises the team!
- Louisville NE
- "We don't rebuild... we don't update (since 1998) either."
- Marion Local OH
- Uh... do not use white font on a white background.
- Midwest Central IL
- One page should contain your results and your schedule just fine.
- Milan MI
- Hot Links, Cool Links??? Reminds me of Dairy Queen. Decent site, but update a few links (like the Awards Banquet).
- Millburn NJ
- You're finally no longer "under construction," but you need to update your records (up to 1996-97).
- Miller City OH
- Some interesting presentation but not much detail on competition play
- Minnetonka MN
- "Who's on Varsity" and "Who's NOT on Varsity" goes to the same page? I can't sense when your competitions are or if your team is current.
- Monmouth IL
- It worries me that results haven't been updated since their first competition of the 1999-2000 campaign.
- Montgomery Blair MD
- Where the heck is the webmaster? No revisions since 1999???
- Mount Carmel IL
- Contact info only.
- Natchitoches Central LA
- You were state runner-ups in 1995-96. Please update.
- New Madrid MO
- Quite simple. How current is your record? Where have you played?
- North Fort Myers FL
- Very boring information.
- Northwest (Germantown) MD
- Well, at least we know who the sponsor is.
- Nouvel Catholic Central MI
- 11/20/2000 update: Nice revamp... but you only play seven matches a year???
- Oak Glen WV
- This is truly embarrassing. Check out the Academic Games site instead.
- Odebolt-Arthur IA
- From the Talented and Gifted program. Let's get "Slap Happy"???
- Patterson LA
- There are tables, but no data.
- Ponchatoula LA
- Simple but rather odd layout and format. Changing fonts is distracting. No updates since 1998-99 season.
- Prairie Valley (Gowrie) IA
- No activities, no roster, ... no idea.
- Pungo Christian Academy (Belhaven) NC
- Just the 1999 roster.
- Putnam County IL
- Photos and small bits of info.
- Ravenscroft (Raleigh) NC
- Just a roster and the theme to "Mission Impossible." It's not that hard to move up, though. (Web page editor has graduated.)
- Richard Montgomery MD
- A team as good as theirs has to have more info than this. No contact info at all.
- Ridgewood NJ
- Not a bad page, though outdated. I would suggest captions on the pictures somehow so we know what we're looking at. Compliments on the Tournament Guide, which gives a pretty nice perspective of the types of tournaments this team competes at (though it might need a bit of formatting and shortening).
- Rolling Meadows IL
- Stats all folks.
- Rutherfordton-Spindale NC
- Does your 1997-98 team still play for your school now?
- St. Anthony MN
- Nice short summaries of events they compete in. No updates since 1998-99 season.
- Salem (Virginia Beach) VA
- Some pictures, some info.
- Seneca Valley MD
- Concise description of activities.
- Sissonville WV
- No members... hmm...
- Southern Valley NE
- Practicing at 7:45 AM Fridays??? If you provided breakfast, maybe you'd get more kids.
- Sparta MI
- Team most likely to be beaten by a shovel???
- St. Croix Falls WI Quiz Bowl and Knowledge Master Pages
- A roster, a small schedule... nothing much here.
- St. Clair MI
- Just a match schedule.
- Terril Community IA
- Just a wrap-up. No picture.
- Ticonderoga NY
- Big fonts REALLY bad. Having a 1998-99 record of 1-1 too. Lots of "jargon" (inside references to rival teams that we have no clue about).
Update (08/15/2000): They really shaped up their web page now; in other words, it's a lot less annoying. They still need to update their pages more, and perhaps include some pictures of the team.
- Thomas Wootton MD
- At least you can catch them on TV.
- Unity IL
- Pictures and a schedule... how nice. Who plays on your team? Will you ever update results after each tournament?
- Vermilion Catholic LA
- It's just one page, but I have to question your choices for your question resources.
- Villa Grove IL
- Pictures and a schedule... two bits.
- Walter Johnson MD
- At least that little mouse is animated.
- Walt Whitman MD
- Sorry, no information here.
- Watkins Mill MD
- A concise description is let down only by a non-working web site link.
- West Catholic MI
- Simple, yet I want more.
- West Shore MI
- This is a site about your competition than it is about you. Consequently, it's not that interesting. No 2000 tournament info???
- West Springfield VA
- 11/22/2000 update: I suppose the only thing the school will let you control is the inclusion of pictures?
- Wheaton MD
- Not even a full page...
- Woodward Academy GA
- Just info.
Incomplete
- Bushnell-Prairie IL
- 2000-2001 info coming soon.
- St. Joseph's Central MA
- Why this team hasn't consolidated its pages into one is probably administrative (different web authors?).
