History of the Celebrity Shoot

by Emil Thomas Chuck

The idea of a biography tournament has been an idea of mine since 1992. After graduation from Duke University and getting used to life in Cleveland, I got involved with the College Trivia Club here. I felt we had a good core of students who were interested in running a high school tournament, but from my experience, I was not sure if this campus could support a conventional buzzer tournament. Consequently, this was an opportunity to bring up a biography bee in 1994. Many of the other members had similar experiences with separate non-buzzer competitions that we were able to hash out a format that addressed many deficiencies of the non-buzzer competitions we had attended.

The name celebrity shoot came from a late night ESPN program the team had watched while competing for the 1994 College Bowl Regional Tournament. The program Charleton Heston's Celebrity Shoot had Hollywood stars like Eric Estrada, Ian Zierling, and Joe Montegna compete in skeet shooting events. The program was so hilarious, the team decided to use the name for the biography tournament.

The format is influenced by various non-buzzer tournaments we have attended in high school, and our competition is intended for both quiz bowl and non-buzzer academic teams. We hope that this competition provides a unique experience that every competitor and spectator will enjoy.
