College Celebrity Shoot Format

Introduction

Why a biography competition?

The CWRU Trivia Club decided to host a novel competition in a novel non-buzzer format. All answers will pertain to individuals who have achieved a national or international popular reputation in his/her field (academic or not). All efforts will be made to including all regions of the world, underrepresented groups and cultures, and all time periods.

We have decided on a non-buzzer format to reward knowledge depth for each team of four students rather than team "speed." Consequently, we have drawn upon our experience with a variety of non-buzzer competitions to produce this format. We do not have a pre-determined syllabus. This way, teams that compete in buzzer competitions and non-buzzer competitions will be at a similar disadvantage.

The following is a list of influences governing this competition's format.

Preliminary Round

For the Preliminary Round, all four members of the team will take identical written tests in separate rooms. Each competitor will be asked to identify 70 different individuals in 30 minutes. The test is written so that competitors write down a written response on an answer sheet, so it's not multiple choice. Last names are sufficient unless otherwise prompted in the question.

The seventy questions are divided into five sets of 14 questions each. Each set is further subdivided by question difficulty and alloted a point-value as follows:

The maximum number of points possible per set is 40 points, making the entire test worth 200 points.

Team Match

In the Team Match, all four members of the team will identify 44 individuals. The questions are given simultaneously to all teams. Each team will submit one written answer to each question for the appropriate number of points.

The 44 questions are divided into three sets of questions as follows:

The maximum number of points possible is 800 points. Each of these sets is further subdivided into sections of questions related by a common category or theme.

Each team will have ten seconds to provide a written answer to the proctor, who will award the appropriate number of points for each correct answer.

There will be "progressive" or "multi-clue" questions as well during the Team Match worth 20 or 30 points. For these questions, two or three clues pertaining to the same person will be read. Teams can submit an answer on an early clue to get more points, but a miss yields nothing. Note that each team only has one chance to answer a multi-clue question! This may change however... stay tuned.

Category Relay

The Category Relay will involve identification of 40 individuals, separated into eight categories of five questions:

Each team will select one member to answer questions for any one Academic Category and any one Potluck Category. Once that person has answered a category, he/she cannot represent the team in subsequent categories of that type (Academic or Potluck).

If you want to know what Categories we will be using, sorry. The Celebrity Shoot Organizers will withhold revealing those categories until just prior to the start of the Relay. We may opt to just announce categories as they come up in the Relay, making it more critical for coaches and team to make up their strategies.

The maximum number of points possible 800 points.

Masters "Tandem" Match

Each team foursome will be required to split themselves up into two groups of two persons. 42 questions on individuals will be asked to everyone in this configuration. Each group submits a written response to each question. For every correct answer, each group will receive the appropriate number of points.

Here's how the questions are organized:
The 42 questions are separated into four major sections.
The first two sections are each made up of 9 questions worth 5, 10, or 15 points. The team score is increased by the appropriate number of points the question is worth.
The last two sections are each made up of 10 questions organized into categories and worth either 10 points each per correct answer (first two category sets) or 20 points each per correct answer (last two category sets).
At the end of each section is a progressive 30/20/10 identification question.

With this arrangement, the total number of points possible in the Masters Team Match is 600 per group, or 1200 possible points for each team.

Note that since this is the only section that is not played at the high school level, the questions in this section should be a bit more difficult than any of the other sections.

The Team Championship

If you haven't read the sections on the Preliminary Round, the Team Bonus Match, the Category Relay, or the Masters Tandems, you better before you read more.

The team championship is determined by combining all the points earned by that team. To spell it out, here's the formula:

  1. Preliminary Round
    Add all four team members' scores (4 x 200 points) = 800
  2. Team Bonus (out of 800)
  3. Category Relay (out of 800)
  4. Tandem Masters (out of 1200)

It's so simple, it's easier than coding this page!

Individual Shootout Championship

Each match will consist of at least 2 sets of 10 questions organized as follows:

The maximum number of points possible is 60 points. These scores will not carry over to subsequent matches. None of the questions sets is organized into categories.

Ah, but what if there's a tie? Additional questions will be read until the tie is broken (i.e., you advance when you get the answer right).

The format of the Individual Finals will depend on the number of participants and our staff, but in general, individuals are seeded based on their performance in the written test.
