What is the Refuge?
The Refuge is a suite of four private rooms on the first floor of Tippit House which offers a homey place to rest, relax, and re-energize. It also offers short-term overnight accommodations in a private room. The Refuge is a positive and confidential option for students who may be dealing with stress of a personal or academic nature or minor illness -- or perhaps someone who just wants a quiet place to take a nap.
The life of college students is sometimes incredibly active and demanding. Social, academic, physical and emotional pressures are all natural at this challenging time. When events and challenges become intense, taking a time out may be the appropriate and healthy response and can be the catalyst for greater personal achievement and growth.
Reasons for the Refuge
If you need to get away from your living environment, if you're not feeling well, are overwhelmed with academics, or have other concerns that may be remedied by time away, then staying at the Refuge may be an appropriate way to regain perspective on things. The live-in coordinator is also available to talk informally with you about any personal concerns.
Location and Description
The Refuge is located on the first floor of Tippit at the "bottom of the hill" next to Fribley commons. Similar to any South Side suite, it has four private bedrooms, a common living room area, a bathroom and a kitchenette. Every effort is made to create an interesting and homey environment. The Refuge is supervised by a live-in staff member, a gal by the name of Rasheda McMullin.
Room Reservation
You may reserve a room by contacting your residence life or greek life staff who will determine if space is available and if your request is appropriate, they will then arrange for you to check in with the Refuge Coordinator. The duration of your stay is based on the nature of your needs. This facility is a free service of the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
Here are some ways a student can make use of the Refuge:
The Refuge could be just what you need. It's confidential. It's meant to be user-friendly. It's not at all embarrassing -- it's just a quiet place to go to get away from the everyday.
