Annual Springfest events filled with performances, fun

It’s the last weekend of classes. With deadlines looming and finals rapidly approaching, it’s probably a good idea to spend some quality time in KSL. But who wants to burrow in the stacks with the lure of inflatable attractions, free food, and live music next door in Freiberger Field?
Slated to kick off at noon tomorrow, Springfest will take over the Heart of Campus with a slew of activities designed to promote Case spirit. The festival opens with a performance by Case in Point, and closes with a concert by Blessid Union of Souls at 7 p.m. Throughout the day, carnival-style booths, interactive attractions, and barbeque grills will be spread out on the lawn. The beer taps start flowing at 4 p.m.
Led by Springfest co-chairs Jon Landers and Kristina Keller and advisor Joe Gutowski, a committee of students worked year-round to plan, organize, coordinate, and publicize the event.
On a campus with few large-scale, university-wide events, Springfest aims not only to provide food and fun, but also to establish a campus tradition. Over 3,500 people attended Springfest last year. This year, the event is open to the public, which Landers hopes will draw more Clevelanders to campus.
“Springfest builds tradition because it draws people outside, and it helps create the community that we are trying to celebrate,” Landers said. “Tradition helps generate school spirit, and you can never have too much school spirit.”
The first Springfest was held in 1998 and was sponsored by the University Program Board. Since its inception, the festival has ballooned in scale and scope, and a number of campus organizations and student groups are now involved in the festival.
“You can’t do work all the time,” Landers said. “Springfest is an opportunity for the campus to come together, and you don’t want to be left out.”
