Wrestlers finish second in the Second City

The Case wrestling team packed up their singlets last weekend and made the trip to Chicago for the UAA Championships. While in the Windy City, amidst deep-dish pizza and all the hookers they could handle, the grapplers finished second out of the three competing schools (Chicago took first), and racked up some individual honors along the way.
The event was held as a tri-meet, which means that Case wrestled against both Chicago and NYU and the two other schools wrestled each other. The Maroons won both meets, while the Spartans defeated NYU, leaving Chicago at 2-0, Case at 1-1, and NYU at 0-2 for the championships.
The Spartans defeated the Violets 34-15, scoring a forfeit victory in the 125 pound weight class to get the ball rolling. Senior Zak Kallai wrestled his way to a 15-3 major decision over NYU’s William St. Pierre in 149. Freshman Russ Tischer won by fall at 4:31 in the 157-pound match, and freshman Mike Sanchez followed suit at 4:05 in the 165-pound bracket. The team’s other two seniors, Aaron Yoches and Josh Schmidt, won decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Case scored another forfeit victory and six points in the heavyweight bracket.
Against the Maroons, Kallai provided the Spartans’ first points of the afternoon, defeating Chicago’s Ryan Hlinak in a 5-2 decision. Sanchez continued his impressive wrestling for the tournament, scoring an 8-0 decision over Kyle McClung and improving his UAA Championship record to 2-0. Yoches provided three points for the Spartans with a 3-0 decision at 184, and Schmidt also remained undefeated for the tournament, defeating Sean Barnes 11-1 for a major decision. In the heavyweight match, freshman Ray Rowe lost a tough match, eventually succumbing to the Maroons’ Tim Daly, 3-1 in triple overtime.
Despite not winning the title, the Spartans did come back from Chicago with some individual hardware. Schmidt won the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award, going 2-0 with a major decision during the championships. The 2004 All-Association Wrestling team was also littered with Spartans. Kallai, Sanchez, and Yoches, in addiditon to Schmidt, represented their weight classes on the list.
The Spartans have put together some impressive meets the past couple of weeks, with the second place at the Manchester Tournament and this past weekend’s performance in Chicago. Many of the wrestlers are excited about finishing the season on a strong note.
“I think we really came together as a team this weekend and our constant improvements are making the tail end of our season more exciting,” said Kallai.
Next up for the grapplers is a trip to the Wheaton College Tournament tonight and tomorrow, followed by the CWRU Quad with RIT, Washington & Jefferson, and Heidelberg, on Valentine’s Day.
