Crew club prepares for winter ergattas

Despite the cold weather and now icy Cuyohoga River, the Case Crew Club has been as active as ever; after months of indoor practicing, they have reached the final stages of preparation for two upcoming indoor rowing sprints. For the non-rowing readers, indoor sprints are simply staged relays on rowing machines called ergometers, and the sprints are called “ergattas” as a play-on-words for regattas (water races).
On Feb. 7, 18 members of the Crew Club will travel to North Catholic High School for the 12th annual Pittsburgh Indoor Rowing Sprints. In preparation for their 2000 meter sprints, sophomore Crew Club President Stephanie Crabtree explained, “We [the women’s team] went to Shaker [Heights High School] to become familiar with their ergs, which are the same ones used at Pittsburgh, and also for some new competition – you can only battle it out with your teammates so often before it gets old.”
Last year’s club president, sophomore Hillary Emer, added, “Going to Shaker was an experience for the women’s team to feel competitive, meet some other Cleveland rowers, and most importantly get some practice time on the newest rowing machines. Pittsburgh Erg Sprints always have the latest equipment and you can watch the races on TV screens as they happen. Concept 2, the company that manufactures ergometers, has come out with the Model D. The Case team practices on Model C’s. While the new ergs aren’t that much different there are enough minor differences that getting a little practice should help boost the team’s confidence at Pittsburgh.
Crabtree also commented, “It was great, though, because we got to compete in relays with and against the Shaker girls. The relays against them, I believe, helped get the adrenaline pumping and made it seem more real.”
Next weekend, the Crew Club will bring some of the indoor competition action to campus; on Feb. 15, Case will be hosting the Hammer Ergatta jointly with neighboring John Carroll University. The Hammer (held at Adelbert Gym and lasting between 9 a.m. until approximately 1:30 p.m.) holds special meaning for the crew team for two key reasons.
“The whole team will be racing at Hammer and the main goal for the team is to win back the team trophy from John Carroll,” Emer explaind. Current president Crabtree excitedly added, “We want to take back the Hammer trophy from John Carroll! We’ve also spent countless hours on the ergs all winter in preparation for both the Pittsburgh sprints and the Hammer. These two events will culminate our winter season.”
The Case Crew Club last held the Hammer trophy in 1998 under then-head coach Tim Marcovy; in 2003, JCU won the trophy by a six-second margin, and in 2002, the Blue Streaks won it by twenty-six seconds. “We’re hoping that the team’s moment can carry us so that we can win by 14 seconds,” Emer said.
Other local schools that will be racing at the Hammer include Baldwin-Wallace, Cleveland State University, St. Ignatius High School men’s team, and Shaker Heights High School women’s team. The Cleveland Scholastic Rowing Association women’s team and the Western Reserve Rowing Association (WRRA) will also row at the Hammer.
