Case teams turn out first place finishes at Spartan Relays

Lauren Felter
Staff Reporter

The Case men’s and women’s indoor track teams hosted Thiel College, Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State Behrend, Fredonia State University and Cuyahoga Community College on Jan. 31 for the Spartan Relays. The Veale Center appeared to provide a significant advantage for Case as both teams repeatedly earned first place finishes, setting the tone for the rest of the season. From sprints to distance running to field events, the Spartans consistently placed ahead of the pack.

For the women, junior Galina Nikolskaya and freshman Emily Bruckner started things off with a bang by taking first and third place in the 55-meter dash. Senior Rebecca Moore followed up with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash and sophomore Harmonie Foster performed well, taking second in the 400 meter dash.

Distance did not slow the Spartans; Junior Amy Staub and sophomore Alison Donnelly came in second and third in the 1500-meter run. Junior Megan Maness said, “The team has really come a long way this year in terms of unity. Last Saturday was proof of the great potential we have for this entire season.”

Several spectators were equally impressed with the performance of the teams. Junior Christina Bodner said, “The relays were a lot of fun and the Case teams did really well. It was great to see so many people out here to support the athletes.” Junior Jordan Smoke added, “The relays are an awesome experience for spectators. There are so many events taking place at one time and there is never a dull moment.”

Junior David Kallevig led the men in the short distance events, taking second in the 400-meter dash. Then, in the 800-meter run, freshman Chris Anderson finished in first, while senior Ben Mellish took third, less than .4 seconds later. Freshman Aaron Johnston-Peck also came out strong with a second place finish in the 1500-meter run.

The longest run of the day – 5000-meters – brought out the best in the Spartan men. Led by senior Matt Finnerty’s first-place finish, sophomore Stephen Hrinda took third and senior Joe Cerimele came in fourth. Cerimele said, “Indoor [track] is fun because there is so much action at one time. When you lose your focus in a long race, there are still plenty of things to keep you going.”

Both the Case men’s and women’s teams stole the show with first place finishes in the 4×400 relays. Smoke was particularly impressed by the relay races. He said, “It’s amazing how fast these guys are … the speed, power, and coordination necessary during everything, including the passing of the baton, is just incredible.”

Even though they cleaned up on the track, the Spartans continued their success in the field events. Senior Jon Fretthold tied for first in the high jump and senior Dan Haylett vaulted 14 feet into first place. Nikolskaya also placed first in the women’s pole vault with a height of 10 feet. Bruckner also participated in the field events, placing third in the long jump.

As though that wasn’t enough, Alex Drollinger took first in the shot put, as did Cassie Armstrong on the women’s side with sophomore Kristen Noon taking second. In the women’s weight throw, junior Diana Kovacic wrapped up first place.

The teams will compete again at home ttonight in the Case Invitational at 6 p.m.
