Spartans split with Brandeis, NYU

Mike Speight
Staff Reporter

After playing very hard against the second-ranked Rochester Yellow Jackets last week and not coming away with a win, the Spartans were looking to get back on the winning track in their next two conference games against the Judges of Brandeis University on Jan. 30 and the Violets of New York University on Feb. 1. In both these games, the Spartans played well offensively and defensively, but were not able to come out of these two games undefeated.

From the opening tip against Brandeis, the Spartans came out on fire, shooting 53.1 percent from the field in the first half, and forcing eight turnovers on the defensive end as well. In the second half, the Spartans continued with their stifling defense, forcing Brandeis to shoot 35.1 percent from the field in the second half.

Case’s top players played extremely well in this game, with sophomore guard Funso Lafe, sophomore forward Carson Oren, and sophomore guard Rich Mullen scoring 17, 15, and 11 points, respectively. This shooting and defensive intensity was just enough for the Spartans to move pass the Judges 71-68.

After the game, Funso Lafe commented on the team’s performance saying, “This game was a really huge momentum booster for us. It finally showed that we can close out a game even when a team is fighting back like [the Judges] did.”

After playing extremely well against the Judges, the Spartans were looking to give NYU all it could handle Sunday afternoon. From the start of the game the Spartans couldn’t find their shooting touch, but were able to keep the game close, only trailing by six at the half.

Still, in the second half the Spartans couldn’t mount a successful comeback, as in the final twelve minutes the Case was outscored by the Violets 28-15. Despite not shooting well throughout the game, Lafe and Oren were still able to produce, scoring 23 and 12 respectively.

Following the game, Lafe was able to put a positive spin on the loss saying, “Even though the final score wasn’t that close, we definitely played well tonight, and we have definitely been improving, and hopefully this weekend we can pull out a win.”

Although the Spartans would have liked to come out of these two games with wins, they showed a lot of character coming back from a loss against the University of Rochester the way they did. Even though the Spartans weren’t able to pull out a victory against New York University, hopefully they can regroup this weekend and pull out a win as they play NYU again this weekend.
