Case med professor criticizes AIDS study
A Case professor of medicine is one of 22 researchers who published a report in the journal Science criticizing a U.S.-sponsored clinical trial of a developing AIDS vaccine. Michael Lederman, M.D., who also directs the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at University Hospitals, contributed to the article because he believe that no persuasive data exists to indicate that the combination of drugs being tested will help protect individuals against contracting HIV.
For this reason, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, an international group of AIDS vaccine scientists, cancelled a similar trial that was to be conducted in the U.S. last year. The present trial under scrutiny is being conducted in Thailand and involves 16,000 people.
“The scientific community must do a better job of bringing truly promising vaccine candidates to this stage of development, otherwise we risk eroding public confidence in the research,” said Lederman.
New center to study environment’s relation to public health
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health opened at the Case School of Medicine Tuesday. Established through a $3.5 million endowment from Swetland and her husband David, the center will focus on medical education, clinical care, research, and public health concerning environment-related illnesses that afflict Clevelanders. Discussion during Tuesday’s opening event centered on the significant local issues of asthma and lead poisoning. These afflictions are of particular concern for children.
Although Mary Ann Swetland passed away in 1969, she was interested in the ways the environment affected health and thought that people need to gain a better understanding of the ways that industry and agriculture affect our health.
Case dissertations may be published online
This spring, all Case graduate students who defend a dissertation will have the option to submit their work to be published electronically through a national Web-based service. The university is only one of four to offer this opportunity.
Established by ProQuest, an Ann Arbor, MI. company that publishes about 55,000 dissertations a year, the process makes it easier for students to publish their work and also speeds up the review process.
This is good news for Case, as University Library deputy director Timothy Robson reports that after receiving hundreds of dissertations every year, the library has run out of space to store hard copies.
“The new electronic publishing option will cut at least one-half the time it takes to turn around a hardbound copy and probably closer to two-thirds of the binding and library processing time,” Robson said.
