Punk bands sound great despite bad crowd
Joel Sanderson
Assistant A&E Editor
I have been to many concerts. Each type has traits that you expect from it. For the Simple Plan, MXPX, Sugarcult, and Motion City Soundtrack concert I saw Tuesday night, I expected energy, energy, and more energy. The concert was not quite what I expected, and MXPX’s show was confounding.
First I’ll cover MXPX. I have seen them in concert before and they play a great show. They sound good and have as much energy as you could ask for from a three-piece band. Once again, they sounded great. The songs were fun to listen to, but I just could not watch. I mean that literally. They brought their own rotating spotlights to the show that spun around going over the audience, changing colors, strobing, and terrifying. The lights blinded everyone they went past, making the show unbearable to watch. I thought I was at a Justin Timberlake concert and a dance crew would come out soon. I enjoyed listening to them, but the lights angered me more than the music pleased me.
The show actually opened with Motion City Soundtrack. I have seen them at the Grog Shop and I can say that they play better with a larger crowd. Their energy was up, they were sounding good, and they did exactly what an opening band is supposed to do: they tried to energize the crowd. The problem was that the crowd was made up of a lot of little girls who watch too much MTV and they just were not into having energy. They wanted to stand and sing along to the songs. I hoped that this would change as the night went on.
Sugarcult played next and were equally good. They have a great sound and they play well. They had a nice conversation with the audience during their set and they tried to connect with the crowd. Once again, the crowd did not respond with energy. There was only jumping when they were specifically told to jump.
The last band to play was Simple Plan, the band all the little girls had come to see. Simple Plan’s last single made it to #1 on MTV’s TRL. Musically they are one of the best pop-punk bands out there and as could be expected they played a great show. During this set there was finally some energy in the crowd. During one song there was even a semblance of a mosh pit, which was impressive. But the energy of the crowd did not equal the energy of the band or the quality of the music.
All the bands sounded great. If I were rating this concert with my ears only, it would be one of the best I’ve ever been to, but I’m not. The atmosphere was lacking. Every band tried to get the crowd going, but none entirely succeed, which I do not blame on the bands. I recommend seeing these bands if they ever come back (which Sugarcult will do on April 20). Little girls will not be allowed to stay up late to go to a concert on a school night twice in the same year, will they?
