Tuition increase in a tough economy? Head for the hills.

It doesn’t take too long to realize that escalating prices are an unavoidable fact of life. Inflation exists and prices (in terms of the number of dollars and cents) increase each year as part of the natural course of events.

With that said, most people would expect to see yearly tuition increases that roughly match the yearly rate of inflation.

But statistics on the federal government’s Web pages show that current inflation rate is 1.88 percent. And tuition is going up 10 percent.

At the very least, this represents an extremely irresponsible decision on the part of the Case administration. As it’s been said before, there’s a time for everything, and the time for large tuition increases is not now.

How many of our parents are making 10 percent more this year? Are 10 percent more people employed this year than last? Are most people 10 percent better off in 2004 than they were in 2003?

The administration’s underlying goal behind charging more to come here is to use the money to enrich the undergraduate experience with better classrooms, upgraded equipment, and new programs. Taken at face value, this is an admirable goal and one worthy of pursuing.

But not now. If the university had bagfuls of extra money to burn, it would be a great idea to develop all sorts of new undergraduate programs and services to further that “experiential learning” method the administration likes to quote so much. Instead, at a time when the economy can be described as mediocre at best, the university is asking students, already cash-strapped from two years of high tuition increases and a tough economy, to foot the bill. Maybe it’s time to get out while the getting’s good.
