We had several committee reports.

The V-fund awarded $1585 to 19 people; John Martin noted that the funds
were distributed more evenly over different fields of study than in the past.
Preliminary interviews for the Diekhoff Award are underway; a meeting of
this committee, to discuss the arrangements for final interviews, is likely
to be held during the second week of April.

The Activities Committee reported that two sponsors have been found for the
(semiformal) May 6 dinner / dance event. A topic of concern was how to
deal with the issue of alcohol consumption without insulting responsible
drinkers. Ideas proposed included selling beverages after dinner (rather
than having them available for free) and having taxis or designated drivers
on call. [Having this said, I should add that the sentiment of GSS is that
no problems are anticipated, but we don't want to be in a difficult or tragic
situation if something unexpected arises.] GSS is also sponsoring musical
groups at the Spring Festival. The activity of softball is cancelled for the
spring semester.

NAGPS is having a regional conference in Minneapolis on April 15-16. We can
send two people. Contact Tom Hund or go to www.nagps.org/region/midwest
for information.

The International Buddy Program is looking for representatives from each
academic department to make contact with international students during
orientation (first week of classes); science and engineering majors are
especially needed. [More information should be available later.]

The Graduate Studies committee of the Faculty Senate recently had a meeting
of "stakeholders" to discuss aspects of the electronic dissertation. While a
direction in which to proceed has not been firmly established, students'
concerns have been aired and are well understood. Dan Kerr emphasized two of
them: Departments/students wanting dissertations to be available on library
shelves in written form will be accommodated. Also, students will likely be
able to submit their dissertations electronically without having them
available for people to read on the Internet for a period of a few years; the
committee at present seems willing to go with a 5-year delay, but Dan has
indicated that he will seek a 10-year grace period. [Please note: The
electronic dissertation is only in the discussion phase. Nobody is going to
be required to submit a dissertation electronically for at least a couple
years (more probably, three or four), though the option may be there as soon
as next year.]

The meeting concluded with nominations for GSS officers (2000-2001). Persons
nominated are:  John Martin, corresponding secretary; Tom Hund, treasurer;
Rich Charnigo, president. Nominations may still be made to John Martin
before the next meeting. We do need a vice president and a recording
secretary for next year. [Current president Adam Majewski indicated at the
meeting that he would not accept a nomination; current vice president Tina
Smith informed me in correspondence that she would not seek to continue as VP
next year. Thanks for your work as officers, Adam and Tina.]
