Graduate Student Senate Minutes: March 4, 1999

Present: John Martin, Heather Kichner, Jennifer Skidmore, Adam Majewski,
Shama Mohammed, Michelle McCoy, Dave Vanik, Katie Leonhardy, Gautham
Ramachandran, Edith Schwede, Rich Charnigo

1. After some discussion, a motion to grant a request from the Biomedical
Engineering Graduate Student Association for funds toward T-shirt printing
was passed, 10-0. A motion followed to fund the BMEGSA for the
fully-requested amount of $250.

2. Committee Reports:
Presidential Search - John Martin reports that the search is nearing
completion. John's work (along with two undergraduates on this committee)
reflects some strides toward better grad student representation on the
CWRU's governing board. The new president will be announced publicly on
March 10 at 10 a.m. John reports that the short-list candidates were all
excellent, so any choice will be an excellent one.

NAGPS - Edith Schwede said goodbye as the NAGPS and American Studies GSS
representative. We thank Edith for her long-term dedication to GSS! Tom
Hund is our current NAGPS rep. GSS members are urged to consider a trip to
the 1999 Midwest Regional Conference in Bloomington, IN, March 26-28. GSS
will pay for registration. For more info visit www.nagps.org or contact
Linda Anderson at Indiana University at linander@indiana.edu. Edith also
encourages GSS reps to attend the national confernce to be held in
November.

Student Activities - Theater Night organizer and GSS VP Jennifer Skidmore
said 78 of 130 grad students who reserved tickets went to see Richard III
at Eldred Theater February 18. We all enjoyed the show tremendously! The
only drawback was that the theater department expected a sold-out house
since GSS bought out the show, and some people who requested tickets did
not keep their commitment to attend.... GSS will be sponsoring the main
stage entertainment at Springfest, April 24.

Library Committee - Representative Shama Mohammed informed us of some
recent security problems at Kelvin Smith (panhandlers, loitering, thefts,
etc.) An ID-swipe system to enforce security is probable for this fall.
Contact Shama at sxm 31 with questions or comments.... Also, An
interlibrary loan demonstration will take place March 23 at 10 a.m. to look
at a new computer system option.... A Faculty Forum on University
Libraries is slated for March 25, 11:45 a.m.- 1 p.m. to discuss current
library concerns, such as book purchasing. Students are welcome to attend.

Diekhoff Award - The Committee has nine (9) nominees to consider, 6 from
Arts/Humanities and 3 from Social/Behavioral Sciences. We met Feb 16 to
finalize the student questionnaire and eligibility requirements. We will
meet March 23 to discuss the returned questionnaires and discuss upcoming
interviews.

V-Fund - The committee has received about a dozen or so applications,
well-spread across unversity departments. A kick-off event for the fund
and Dean Verhosek is in the works.

3. A Reminder: We elect new GSS officers at the next meeting, April 8.
Nominations by e-mail are now open in preparation for the upcoming
election. Departments should have new (or returning) representatives in
place by the April meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Heather J. Kichner
Case Western Reserve University English Department
GSS Recording Secretary
