The meeting opened with Adam Majewski's description of GSS discussions with
Dean Jentoft. Several topics were brought up: the search for a new assistant
dean; equity of funding across departments; work/study as an option for
students receiving financial aid; the availability of information to students
about grants and other forms of assistance; the V-fund; tuition taxation and
the possibility of an information session for students about tax issues;
Career Planning and Placement requesting guidance as to how to best serve the
graduate student community; the roles of and opportunities to serve as
teaching assistants; and, the electronic dissertation (still years off before
being "the norm" and required).

Meetings with Dean Bassett and Dean Wagner are scheduled for 26 January and
 7 February, respectively.

The Alumni Association will make available $2000 for an activity to be
coordinated by GSS. The most likely outcome right now is a semiformal event
in March or April; the Activities Committee and additional GSS volunteers
will begin working on this.

The International Student Buddy System --- designed to help welcome new
international students to CWRU and the Cleveland area --- was briefly
addressed today. GSS members received a note a few days ago detailing ideas,
and today reaffirmed their support for the concept; the plan is to have the
ISBS up and running for the upcoming academic year.

Graham Cormode reported that an electronic mail list is being compliled so
that information may be disseminated efficiently to graduate students.

Several committee reports were given:

* Dean Jentoft hopes to have the position of Assistant Dean filled by this
May; at this point, the decision is to be made among three candidates.

* The Diekhoff Committee has formulated several criteria for the selection of
an outstanding graduate teacher from engineering and natural sciences.
Notices have been distributed to GSS members to post and/or circulate in
their departments. The deadline for nomination is 19 February, and
nominations are to be sent to John Martin, jcm2.

* GAINS (Graduates Allied in Service) is running a clothing drive from 28
January to 4 February. This to benefit Bosnian refugee families (who are
being helped by Eastlake Schools), homeless men (at the Y-haven), and
women/children (at the Miracle Village). Checks made out to individual
institutions (not to GSS or GAINS directly) should be acceptable.

* The Faculty Senate Computing Committee and the Undergraduate Faculty
Academic Computing Committee have brought up some issues. First, the idea of
merging the committees was mentioned, since their charges overlap. New
software ("Blackboard") is in the testing phase; this would allow professors
and their assistants to post materials online. There has been question as to
whether the Micrcomputer Ownership Program might be extended also to graduate
students, but this seems unlikely. Finally, John Martin is our
representative to the committee appointed to find a new vice president for
information services; President Auston reportedly plans to have this position
filled by May.

* The Faculty Senate Research Committee is preparing a letter to inquire
about some taxation issues. Since it is, at times, unclear whether someone
is an employed student or a student employee, there have been inconsistencies
in the government's taxation procedures.

Finally, there is a meeting on 29 February to work on a new Master Plan for
CWRU; input from graduate students is being solicited.
