Philanthropy

The sisters of Alpha Chi Omega commit themselves to philanthropy and service. Each year sisters contribute hours upon hours to local organizations and national philanthropies in an effort to give back to the community. Alpha Chis support other Greek chapters with their annual events such as Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash to support the Cleveland Sight Center, Zeta Psi’s Qdoba Relay which supports Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, and Phi Mu/Sig Ep’s joint Flag Football tournament in support of the Children’s Miracle Network and Youth Aids, just to name a few. Sisters also work face-to-face with the community through such organizations as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Little Sisters of the Poor, Hiram House, the Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland, and through CWRU sponsored Saturday’s for Service. The most rewarding service project that sisters take part in is visits to the Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland, where we go to serve homemade dinners and play games with the kids.

Domestic Violence Awareness Week

At Alpha Chi Omega's 1992 National Convention, delegates voted to adopt the Support of Victims of Domestic Violence as a national altruistic project. Through educational activities and local support, Alpha Chi Omega continues to work toward the elimination of domestic violence.

Each year, the Zeta Upsilon chapter of Alpha Chi Omega attempts to spread domestic violence awareness throughout the campus with a week of events in late October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This past year the sisters reached out to the community through flyers, signs, Facebook, and word-of-mouth in an effort to make people more aware. In fact, you may have seen the fact signs that lined many of the major sidewalks around campus.

Other events that the chapter hosts during DVA Week include a candlelight vigil, self-defense class, and kickball tournament. The Hidden Voices Candlelight Vigil was a new event this year in which sisters built life-size figures that represented men, women, and children who have died as a result of domestic violence. Self-defense class was an opportunity for girls and guys to come together and learn basic moves and how to use everyday objects such as keys and pens in defense. The 3rd annual Kickball Tournament closes out every week with organizations around campus joining the sisters on Freiberger Field for a bracket style tournament of everyone’s favorite schoolyard game.

Alpha Chis work closely with other campus organizations including UPB, the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women, and Case Tae Kwon Do to make all the events possible.

All the money raised from the Kickball tournament and Raffle ticket sales goes to the local Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland through the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.
