Rockefeller Building described as "at once useful and grand - a comfy collaboration of old and new."

The year 1905 was a landmark for physics. Albert Einstein developed a quantum theory explaining the photo-electric effect and introduced the theory of relativity, supported by the famous experiment conducted in 1887 by Case School of Applied Sciences physicist Albert A. Michelson and Western Reserve University chemist Edward W. Morley.

That was also the year in which the Rockefeller Physics Building opened and became the site of teaching and research by generations of notable faculty members including Robert S. Shankland, Dayton C. Miller, Nobel laureate Frederick Reines, Leslie L. Foldy, B.S. Chadrasekhar and Lawrence M. Krauss.The Rockefeller Building was financed through a gift from Cleveland oil magnate John D. Rockefeller.

Then department chair Dayton C. Miller - a pioneer who produced the first full x-ray of the human body - worked with architect Charles Schneider to create a building that stands today as a functional and aesthetic triumph.
