U.S. Led Military Action in Iraq: Reaffirming our Fundamental Values March 20 - 2003

President Edward M. Hundert

ACTION IN IRAQ: An Important Time to Reaffirm Respect for All People

To the Members of the Campus Community:

With the start of U.S.-led military action in Iraq, this is an important time to reaffirm the fundamental value of respect for all people that is a hallmark of a great university. Case Western Reserve is committed to being a place where people with divergent perspectives on many issues can air them freely and thoughtfully, and where we make a genuine effort to listen to, to learn from, and to discuss the views of others.

The members of this campus share the same wide range of views on the military action against Iraq that can be found elsewhere in the nation and across the world. In addition, we have students here from 90 other countries, many of whom are quite immediately affected by this military action. I trust that this diversity of perspective and opinion will continue to be respected and valued as an essential characteristic of the kind of university we wish to be, a safe haven for the expression of different points of view by all who come to learn. If you are the subject of any harassment or discriminatory act, please be in touch with Protective Services, the Office of Equal Employment and Diversity, the Office of Student Affairs, or the Office of International Student Affairs.

Safety of the members of the campus community in a time of increased danger is an important priority, of course. We have no evidence of any specific threats to the University community, but we are prepared with information that will be useful to the campus in the event of any incidents.

This is a time when the values we hold most dear must be reaffirmed. I know the wonderful people of this campus, and I know that you will respond to this challenge.
