Approximately 60% of severely mentally
ill individuals live with their families or nearby. However,
many family members who want to help their mentally ill
relative are unsure of how to do so. This book was designed
and written to offer practical information, advice, guidance
and hope to individuals and families facing this challenge.
Rather than publishing a book in print, the Case University
faculty contributors and the leadership staff from the
Fairfax Foundation selected the Internet as the venue
for distribution with the hope of accessing large numbers
of family members. We would like to formally thank the
many individuals and family members who presented their
personal stories, offered advice and provided consultation
to this effort. These contributions were made with the
