RESIDENCY—Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Maryellen Davis, MD
Director, Child & Adolescent Fellowship Program
Department of Psychiatry

This two-year fellowship program is dedicated to the training of motivated and well-educated child and adolescent psychiatrists who will graduate with a comprehensive understanding of human development, of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, and of the evidence-based treatment modalities for those psychiatric disorders. The large number of faculty and extensive clinical experiences insure a comprehensive training.

Department and Faculty

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is vigorous! In May, 2004, this fellowship received re-accreditation for a full 5 years. The total number of fellows has increased from 6 to 8 (4 fellows per year). The Division was awarded a large grant to provide for additional faculty members and to open a new, 14-bed inpatient unit. The inpatient unit, at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, opened in April 2008. At this time, the division has 10 child psychiatrists, 1 behavioral pediatrician, and 6 child psychologists The teaching provided by our experienced faculty, both full-time and at training sites outside of the hospital, reinforces the knowledge provided during the five hours a week of didactics. The Division also benefits from a large research team that is responsible for running research protocols. Training is enhanced by the variety of clinical experiences provided. In addition to the new psychiatric inpatient unit at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, fellows see outpatients in our newly remodeled clinic and have rotations at three community mental health centers, at juvenile court, with pediatric neurology, at a residential treatment center for chemically dependent adolescents, and in three different school settings. Fellows also benefit from the division’s large research team that is responsible for carrying out research protocols.
