DEPARTMENT STRUCTURE and LEADERSHIP

O V E R V I E W
  1. Dr. Henri Brunengraber is the Department Chair.
  2. As Department Vice-Chair, Dr. Edith Lerner is responsible for the educational programs and for the faculty whose primary effort focuses on the education of students.
  3. Primary faculty are full-time Nutrition faculty for whom the Department of Nutrition is financially responsible.
  4. Secondary faculty have their primary appointment in other medical school departments yet contribute to the educational and/or research mission of the Department of Nutrition.
  5. Adjunct faculty (approximately 65 - 2006-09 University General Bulletin) are employed outside of the University, however they contribute to the education of students and are recognized with this faculty designation. They are not paid by the Department of Nutrition and most are preceptors for internship rotations for public health nutrition graduate students.
O R G A N I Z A T I O N
  • The Primary Faculty whose major focus is education/teaching are: Barkoukis, Hodges, Kavanagh, Korsberg, Lerner, Parraga, Steiber and Swain. Barkoukis, Kavanagh, Previs and Swain are undergraduate (B.S./B.A.) Advisors. Swain is also the Director of the accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) which comprises the coursework required for a dietetic internship. Lerner advises all students in the Integrated B.S./M.S., all students in the M.S. in Nutrition and M.D./M.S.
  • Parraga is the Director of M.S. in Public Health Nutrition Program (PHN) which includes an accredited dietetic internship. Parraga advises all students in the PHN. Hodges assists Parraga with development, planning, and evaluation of internship rotations for the public health nutrition program. Hodges also serves as the Registered Dietitian (R.D.) for the University Health Service one afternoon a week where undergraduate, graduate, and professional students can avail themselves of individualized nutritional counseling.
  • Steiber is the Director of the M.S. in Nutrition Coordinated with accredited dietetic internships at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She advises these graduate students, supervises their required research projects, and collaborates on curriculum with the Internship Directors at each hospital. Korsberg teaches 2 undergraduate courses open to all students on campus and also assists Steiber with curriculum for the M.S./Hospital Internship Program.
  • The Primary Faculty whose major focus is research are: Brunengraber, Croniger, Ernsberger, Hatzoglou, Manor, Previs and Whittaker. Additionally, Croniger is a co-director of the Nutrition, Biochemistry/GI Curriculum Block for first year medical students. Whittaker is the Nutrition Ph.D. Program Director.
  • The Secondary Faculty make key contributions, e.g. Demko is an epidemiologist in the School of Dentistry who teaches NTRN 529 - Nutritional Epidemiology, a required course for the PHN students; Groh-Wargo has her primary appointment in Pediatrics and teaches NTRN 533 - Nutritional Care of the Neonate, which is held in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at MetroHealth Medical Center; Noy in Pharmacology (CWRU) and Nagy in Pathobiology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Stanley in Physiology (formerly of CWRU; now at University of Maryland) are research advisors for some Nutrition Ph.D. students.
