Introduction
We live in a time that has seen men walk on a celestial body other than earth and take the first steps to understand the gene well enough to create new life forms. Yet, we also live in a time where peace continues to be only a promise, concerns about environment deterioration growth, and a general malaise about the spiritual well being of individuals and our communities spread. The explosion of information creates tremendous challenges for the organization of knowledge and the creation of wisdom in individuals and communities. Universities are in a unique social position to provide opportunities for learning that will allow individual citizens, as well as communities to survive and hopefully thrive in an increasingly challenging world.

Integrative Studies was founded in 1999 with the commitment to apply knowledge wherever found and whenever needed to create opportunities for positive personal and social growth. Based at Case Western Reserve University, it addresses the health of the community by engaging a variety of relevant disciplines. By virtue of its global activities it extends its influence beyond Cleveland to the nation and the world particularly concerning its programs related to age-related cognitive changes. The program is built on the concept that aging is not just for the old. We are all aging; lifelong learning and lifelong commitment to personal development are essential at all ages.

The staff of Integrative Studies is involved in a variety of private, industry, and nationally funded efforts to improve the cognitive abilities and wisdom of people of all ages building on our international reputation in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Research and educational activities are conducted collaboratively with faculty from practically all the schools at Case Western Reserve University, affiliated hospitals, and other community organizations. The research is outcomes oriented and evidence-based. Particular attention is given to the study of quality of life.

Integrative Studies is on the forefront of educational innovations, including experiential learning and distance learning. Projects include the use of artificial intelligence to assist clinical decision-making and the development of websites to enhance the function of geriatric learning teams. The use of multimedia in public presentations and the development of CD-ROMs are also at the heart of many of the programs in Integrative Studies. Collaborative relationships with several information services groups at CWRU facilitate the focus on distance learning and with individuals in the management school on experiential learning and Appreciative Inquiry.

Integrative Studies are involved in a series of organizational change efforts, involving for example, the Cleveland public schools and healthcare systems in Cleveland. Thus, a major effort of Integrative Studies has been the creation of innovative organizational structures and processes for addressing social problems. The Integrative Studies group is involved in national efforts at health reform such as the Vvaleo Initiative as well as international efforts to create spaces for conversations amongst the world religions through the United Religions Initiative.

Finally, Integrative Studies is about service to local communities. Increasingly, the group has been focusing on the health and educational problems of Cleveland and taking advantage of national networks to facilitate positive growth in the learning and healing environments found in our community. Integrative Studies is an example of CWRU's new efforts at community engagement.
