Director
Peter J. Whitehouse is the founder and director of the Integrative Studies program. He is a Professor in Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Neuroscience, Nursing, Biomedical Ethics, Organizational Behavior and History. He has served in a variety of university capacities relating to the budget, promotions, research, and education. His research career began at The Johns Hopkins University where he developed the Brain Resource Center and made pioneering discoveries in the basic biology of dementia. For example, his work on the neuropathology of the cholinergic basal forebrain contributed to the development of the first effective medications for Alzheimer's disease. In addition to his research training, Dr. Whitehouse is a neurologist, geriatrician, and psychologist, and personally cares for patients with a variety of age-related cognitive concerns. He is an active and committed clinician. He incorporates into his clinical practice, relationship-based care as well as an open-minded attitude towards complimentary and alternative medicine. He is strongly grounded in scientific medicine, including evidence-based medicine, as he is member of the Cochrane Collaboration Dementia and Cognitive Enhancement Editorial Board.
