Nicole Marie Deming is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She received her B.A. in Biology and Philosophy, with honors, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In 2005, she earned her M.A. in Bioethics from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. In May of 2008, she received her J.D., with honors, from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and earned concentrations in both International Law and Health Law.
Ms. Deming will be primarily based in the Center for Biomedical Ethics at MetroHealth Medical Center, working closely with Mark Aulisio, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Bioethics. She will be active in the Clinical Ethics Program and Research Ethics at MetroHealth. Ms. Deming is a member of the Institutional Review Board at MetroHealth and will serve as the Research Subject Advocate (RSA) for the NIH-funded Clinical Science Translational Collaborative project.
Ms. Deming’s research interests include the informed consent process, patient/physician communication, professionalism, research regulations, and living organ transplants. She just returned from a trip for the kick-off meeting of the Global Alliance of Biomedical Ethics Centers (GABEX), led by the University of Tokyo Center for Biomedical Ethics and Law in Japan.
Ms. Deming will teach courses in bioethics and professionalism and research ethics. She will work closely with students that choose the research track in the Bioethics Masters Program. Her teaching experiences range from working as an instructor at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center in the National Park to reviewing curriculum for the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research Ethics in the Classroom Science Curriculum in Seattle, WA. She will continue to work with area high schools to discuss clinical and research ethics in the classroom.
