|
Elizabeth E. O'Toole, M.D., holds numerous positions at the
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and its affiliated
hospitals. She is: Professor of Medicine, Bioethics,
and Family Medicine at CWRU and University Hospitals of Cleveland;
Director of the Clinical Ethics Program, CWRU; Associate Director,
University Center on Aging and Health; Director of the Section
of Geriatrics and Palliative care in General Internal Medicine
at MetroHealth Medical Center; Co-Director of the Western Reserve
Geriatric Education Center.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Boston University
, and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of
Medicine. She did her internal medicine residency at University
Hospitals of Cleveland and the Veterans Administration Medical
Center , followed by a fellowship in general internal medicine,
clinical ethics, and another fellowship in geriatric medicine.
She has published on end-of-life issues, including: "Withdrawing
treatment in the persistent vegetative state"; "Ethical
issues in management of the institutionalized patient with Alzheimer's
disease"; "Two times what? Quantity and quality of
life in tube feeding decisions"; "Complementary therapies
for older adults: an exploratory survey of primary care physicians'
attitudes"; "Ethical issues in special care units.
Research and Practice in Alzheimer's Disease." Subjects
of her published abstracts include: "Patient preferences
for nonaggressive care, discussion about hospice and survival
among hospitalized middle-aged and older cancer patients";
"Decision making influences on care of hospitalized late-stage
cancer patients opting for nonaggressive care"; "Physician
and nurse knowledge and use of geriatric best practices."
