Professional Development/Executive Education Programs

Rob Fischer

Hundreds of nonprofit leaders and managers attended Mandel Center professional development programs last year. We have created an exciting array of programs for this year – all geared to help you and your organization remain sustainable and become even more effective, despite a challenging environment.

  • Topics
      -   are determined with nonprofit practitioners and are based on current trends and emerging issues in leadership and nonprofit management.
  • Content
      -   is drawn from the Center’s academic and research areas. This year, programs cluster into four areas of the highest learning priorities for nonprofit leaders and managers. In addition to established, highly-rated offerings, many offerings are new and tie to the current economic climate.
  • Formats
      -  vary to meet the learning needs and budgets of participants and their organizations.

    • full day or multi-day formats, often with a workplace-based project
    • half-day formats with planned activities that help participants immediately apply learning while the professor is readily accessible to answer questions or address concerns. (It should be noted that several professors report that they provide support following a seminar to further application of learning “on the job.”)

    • brief, high impact conversations that generate discussion about pressing sector and community issues and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Team attendance
      -   organizations are encouraged to send teams to increase the likelihood that learning will be applied in the workplace. Special pricing is used as an incentive.
  • Pricing
      -  organizations may choose the seminars or conversations they believe best meet the learning/professional development needs of the organization and its staff. In celebration of the Center's 25th Anniversary, a second person from the same organization, may attend most programs for just $25 more.

2009-10 Series
Working in concert with practitioners, we determined that current learning needs to be clustered under four categories. The Center is presenting its 2009-10 open enrollment programs under these four categories, or learning strands. They are:

  • The Business of Nonprofits
a series of practical theory-to-application learning seminars and conversations led by faculty. Several are repeated from the previous year due to demand. Others are new this year and reflect community needs and practitioner learning interests. All are geared to help nonprofit leaders and managers improve their responsiveness – and their organization’s effectiveness – across a range of management areas.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 9:00-10:30 a.m.
“Coopetition” – Can We Survive This Alliance?

    Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 9:00-12:00 noon
    Earned Income: Assessing Your Readiness

    Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Dial It Back – Lower Conflict in Difficult Discussions

    Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 9:00-10:30 a.m.
    Regionalism – What’s Next?

  • Dare to Lead
a series of conversations about today’s difficult challenges – or opportunities – to prompt discussion and explore action alternatives for and among managers and executives who face extraordinary leadership challenges.
