What are "matching funds"?

In the context of this document, the term "matching funds" refers to funds made available by the Office of the Provost to supplement other funds obtained by faculty for the purpose of supporting faculty research activities related to Advanced Research Computing at the University.

Who may apply?

Anyone with a regular (non-adjunct, non-clinical) faculty appointment who is employed by Case Western Reserve University may apply.

How to apply?

An application form created for this purpose should be used. This form will request information that includes a description of the research being conducted and the sources of the funds being matched. You may find the form here.

How much matching funding is available?

The Office of the Provost is making up to $200K available in matching funds for FY2009-2010.

How much may one apply for?

Matching fund awards are ordinarily made in the range of $5K to $20K, but larger (and smaller) amounts will be considered with additional justification. Each faculty member is ordinarily limited to a total matching request of $40K in any one fiscal year, but exceptions will be considered with additional justification. Up to a 100% match may be requested against funds from an external funding agency. Up to a 50% match may be requested against internal funds from start-up funds, departmental funds, school/college funds, etc.

For what purpose may the funds be used?

The funds may be used to purchase hardware to be incorporated into the HPC Resource operated by the Core Facility in Advanced Research Computing, to purchase licenses for software to be installed for general use on the HPC Resource operated by the Core Facility in Advanced Research Computing, to increase a faculty member's membership share in the HPC Resource through membership fee, to provide salary support for personnel within CFARC (thereby increasing the membership share), and for other purposes deemed appropriate by ACRC.

When can/should applications be made?

There is no fixed set of submission dates for applications. An application for matching funds may be made prior to submission of a research proposal in order that the match commitment, if awarded, can be included in the proposal. Or an application for matching funds may be made to match funds that have already been awarded as a part of a research grant to the faculty member. Applications for a match against internal funds may be made at any time.

Who makes the award decisions?

The Advisory Committee on Research Computing reviews the applications and makes award decisions.
