SECURITY ADVISORY

 

Type of Incident:  Theft of Laptop Computers                                

Location of Incident:  Case Quad                  

Date(s)/Time(s) of Incidents:  Friday, March 18 between 12 midnight and 12 noon @ Wickenden.
                                       Tuesday, April 12 between 5:00pm and 5:45pm @ Rockefeller.
                                                   Thursday, April 14 at 10:00am @ Wickenden.


Incident Description:  There have been two laptop thefts and one attempted laptop theft in the past month. The latest incident at Wickenden was called in by two students who witnessed the two suspects attempting to steal a laptop. The laptop was secured with security cable, and the suspects were unable to remove the laptop. The suspects exited the building and split up as they left campus.  Suspect #1 was apprehended by Case Protective Services and University Circle Police officers.  Suspect #2 was not  apprehended.

Description of Suspect(s):  Suspect #1 is a black male, 50 years old, 5'8", 140 lbs, short hair with graying beard.  He was wearing black dress pants, grey sweater and a black leather jacket.
Suspect #2 is described as a black male, 50 years old, 6'3", 250 lbs with short hair and glasses.  He was wearing grey pants and a black waist-length coat. 

Additional Information: Please remember to secure your laptop at all times.  Laptop security cables are available through Protective Services, contact Karen Gregor at x6811 or kag4.  We thank the students who immediately called in the suspicious persons/activity, leading to the capture of a suspect!

  Awareness Information


-To report a crime, suspicious activity or any emergency, please immediately contact the Protective Services Dispatch Center , 24 hours a day, at 368-3333 .  Dispatchers will direct the appropriate University and City responders for the situation.
 
- Protective Services and University Circle Police patrol the campus continually in patrol vehicles, utility vehicles, bicycles, and on foot. 
 
- Escorts are provided anywhere on campus and locations immediately adjacent to campus.  Request an escort 24 hours a day by calling 368-3333 or by using an emergency phone, located throughout the campus.

- Protect yourself by using the campus bus service http://greenie.case.edu/   or the escort service rather than walking alone.  Jog or bike during daylight only in areas you are familiar with and stay within University Circle http://www.universitycircle.org/uc_maps_parking.asp#   if you live on campus.  Let a responsible person know where you are going, when you will return and how to contact you if you go somewhere alone outside of your normal routine.  Trust your gut feelings and avoid persons and situations that make you feel uncomfortable.
 
- Protect your belongings by locking your office/room door every time you leave, don't leave purses, book bags, laptops and other valuables unattended.  Keep valuables out of site in your car. Don't allow tailgaters to enter secured doors behind you. Report thefts or suspicious activity immediately to Protective Services.
