Notice Concerning the Recent Earthquake in Japan

This advisory is for Japanese and other foreign national from the Pacific stranded in the United States due to the earthquakes and tsunami devastation in the Pacific. If you have exceeded or are about to exceed your authorized stay in the U.S. you may be permitted up to an additional 30 days to depart.

If you are affected by this, please contact the office of Immigration and Human Resourse Services for further help.



All departments should review the Hiring Process for Foreign Nationals and then contact IHRS for information regarding visa applications, especially for those applicants who are in scientific fields, overseas processing times, possible delays and Security Advisory Opinions (SAOs).

On July 1, 2004, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued the final rule, authorizing collection of the SEVIS fee for F-1, J-1 and M-1 non-immigrant classification.

Effective September 1, 2004, J-1 Exchange Visitors who apply for a non-immigrant visa whether beginning a new program or who will require a visa to re-enter the U.S. to continue in the same program, must pay this fee prior to visa application. The fee can be paid electronically or by mail. In either case, the remitter will be provided with a paper receipt. The paper receipt must then be provided to a consular officer at the time of visa application.

The old fee schedule applies to cases filed with the government before November 22, 2010. Please check with the Office of Immigration and Human Resource Services before ordering checks to assure that this deadline can be met.
