NetWare Services -> About NetWare

What does NetWare do?

NetWare provides faculty and staff with a place to keep important files and programs, and lets them safely and securely share those files with other people.

What do I need to use NetWare?

You need a NetWare account, and, if you're using Windows, a NetWare client installed on your computer.

Is my NetWare account the same thing as my CWRU e-mail account?

No. Your CWRU id and password gives you access to your e-mail and some areas of the CWRU web site. While your NetWare ID is the same as your CWRU id, your NetWare password is different from your e-mail password, and only gives you access to the NetWare services on CWRUnet.

What is a Client?

A client is a program on your computer that lets your computer talk to NetWare -- in Windows, you must install some sort of NetWare client software before you can use NetWare services. There are two different kinds of NetWare clients that you could install:

  • The Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks comes with Windows, and lets you use some very basic NetWare services. However, the Microsoft clients for Windows 95, 98 and NT do not support the protocol used by the newer NetWare 5 servers on CWRUnet. While the Windows 2000 client does, it is not supported on CWRUnet.
  • The Novell NetWare Client is a more robust program from the creators of NetWare, and provides many more services than the Microsoft Client.

If you want to use CWRUnet NetWare services, you need to install the Novell Client instead of the Microsoft one. The Microsoft client cannot talk to some of our newer servers.

If you are using a Macintosh, you do not need any special client software.
