UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

Administered jointly by the Department of English and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the Literature Program provides an international perspective on literary study. In contrast to programs limited to a single national literature or to listings in one language only, the program encourages a study of texts in and from several modern languages and an examination of the social and artistic properties these texts share. The curriculum provides each student with a foundation in literary and cultural history, intermediate competence in a modern foreign language, and advanced study of a number of different topics, genres, methods, and historical periods.

Major

The major, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree, consists of at least 33 hours of course work, including both a two-semester sequence in literary and cultural history chosen from ENGL 255-256, CMPL 211-212, and LITR 290-291 and either FRCH 202, GRMN 202, SPAN 202, or the equivalent in another modern foreign language.

The remaining courses are to be chosen with the approval of the student's advisor from CMPL, FRCH, ENGL, GRMN, LITR, and SPAN offerings in literature, film, and creative writing. At least 21 hours of such electives should be at the 300-level or above. At least six hours should be in courses concerned with literature before 1800 (e.g., CMPL 320 or ENGL 341), and at least three others should be in courses primarily concerned with methods and concepts of literary study (e.g., ENGL 365G or ENGL 379) or with the nature of a genre (e.g., CMPL 321, ENGL 257, or ENGL 368A).
