College of Arts and Sciences

The disciplines represented in the College of Arts & Sciences provide, first, a curriculum which grounds all undergraduate students in scholarly approaches to understanding human nature and behavior and in the substance of scientific knowledge and methods of research. In both general education courses and in the major and minor programs, these disciplines teach ways of contemplating, investigating, and evaluating human experience and the natural world. Second, the College of Arts & Sciences provides graduate curricula in a select number of fields in which CWRU's size and special expertise allow it to make a distinctive contribution to advanced education and research in the arts, the humanities, and the physical, biological and social sciences
The undergraduate general education courses offer instruction in critical thinking and reading, in writing and oral presentation, in quantitative reasoning, and in experimental and theoretical orientations toward knowledge that are basic to a liberal education.
The undergraduate and graduate major programs in the arts, humanities, and social sciences investigate human activity from diverse perspectives and methodologies, ranging from the creation, performance, and analysis of artistic texts to theoretical and experimental study of individual and social behavior. With particular strengths in the chemical and biological sciences, the programs in mathematics and the sciences cover the whole range expected in a research university. Cooperation among departments has produced interdisciplinary programs in such fields as international studies, American studies, environmental studies, and women's studies, that enable students to explore contemporary problems by integrating a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Collaborative opportunities with departments in the Case School of Engineering allow the development of applied perspectives on basic science questions and undergraduates as well as graduate students are encouraged to engage in independent research in their chosen fields of study. Many of the academic programs of the College of Arts & Sciences extend into the community in the form of human services, educational collaboratives, summer internships in research and business, arts presentations, lecture series, and symposia.
