Graduate Programs

Master of Science in Management Science (M.S.M.S.)

The following degree requirements are in addition to the requirements of the School of Graduate Studies.
The Program
The entering student is expected to have a mathematical background that includes a basic understanding of proof techniques, two years of calculus and one course each in linear algebra and a structured programming language. The student should also have some scientific computer programming abilities. Students who lack these capabilities are required to take the following two courses: OPRE 408 is a one-credit-hour course; OPRE 409 and all other courses referred to below are three-credit-hour courses.
The following required courses constitute the core of the M.S.M.S. program: Either of the following two courses: Each student also must select one of the following areas of concentration: operations research, operations management, banking and finance, marketing or management information and decision systems. At least four graduate-level courses must be taken in the concentration area. Two additional courses are required outside the concentration area which may be replaced with an equivalent amount of work on a master's thesis, if that option is chosen.

All M.S.M.S. students are required to pass a comprehensive examination. In addition, students are required to attend a series of seminars surveying different areas of management.

A cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 is required to obtain the M.S.M.S. degree. Students must apply for graduation through the School of Graduate Studies.

Refer to the Operations Research Bulletin of Graduate Programs, available from the Department of Operations Research, for more detailed information.

Master of Science in Organization Development and Analysis

The Department of Organizational Behavior offers a 24-month master's program for students who live and work full-time in the northeast Ohio area. The M.S.O.D.A. program combines academic and experiential work in the theory and techniques of analysis and intervention for constructive change in organizations. Students combine intensive academic work with program-related work in the organizations in which they are employed. The program stresses the development of practical skills in the facilitation of planned change processes in organizations.

Ph.D. in Management

The Ph.D. in Management program is designed for individuals whose career goals are to conduct research and teach in academic, policy-making or research institutions. The program provides both a general background in management and strong specialization in the individual's choice of major field (accountancy, banking and finance, health care management, labor and human resource policy, management information systems, marketing and management policy). A program of study is largely tailored to each student's needs and career goals. Students are encouraged to engage in publishable research before receiving their doctorates. They also are given the opportunity to teach courses after admission to candidacy.

An integral strength of the Ph.D. in Management program at the Weatherhead School of Management is its attention to the individual. A successful doctoral experience requires more than coursework. Frequent one-to-one interaction with faculty in the area of one's specialization is necessary for developing conceptual and methodological skills. Only a few students are admitted to the doctoral program each year, guaranteeing direct communication with faculty in research, teaching and advanced independent study courses.

The Ph.D. in Management program has been designed so that the student, in cooperation with an adviser, can develop the plan of study that best meets his or her career objectives.

Specific requirements for completion of the program are detailed in its rules and regulations; fundamentally, the requirements are:

Because only a small number of applicants can be admitted each year, selection is limited to those whose credentials are strong and whose interests match well with the faculty's. Each applicant is required to furnish an official copy of his or her GMAT score, official transcripts, at least three letters of recommendation, and a statement of his or her area of interest. Financial aid is available on a competitive basis, ranging from graduate assistantships to fellowships and lectureships.

Ph.D. in Operations Research

In the field of operations research, sometimes called management science, mathematical analysis and computer-based algorithms are used to make decisions regarding the design and operation of man-machine systems, usually under conditions requiring the allocation of scarce resources. Over half of the Ph.D. graduates of the Department of Operations Research enter academia.

Prior to formal entry into the Ph.D. program, the candidate is required to pass the M.S. comprehensive examination as well as the Ph.D. comprehensive examination. Main topics include linear programming, probability and statistics, and computer simulation and methods. Students may elect to specialize in either operations research or operations management.

A number of required courses in specific areas (mathematical programming, stochastic processes/statistics and applied courses) must be taken. The course work forms a coherent program of study which provides a depth of knowledge of the field as well as a comprehensive understanding of related subjects. It is estimated that an additional 27-33 hours of course work beyond the M.S. degree will be required for the completion of the program. The student also must conduct a thorough and interpretive literature survey of a topic in the field.

Additional requirements are 9 credit hours of graduate course work devoted to a minor field of study and 18 hours of OPRE 701 (dissertation), writing an acceptable dissertation and passing the dissertation oral examination.

It is possible for a well-prepared student who devotes full time to the program to complete all requirements in three years.

Refer to the Operations Research Bulletin of Graduate Programs, available from the Department of Operations Research, for more detailed information.

Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior

The doctoral program offered by the Department of Organizational Behavior focuses on the development of competence in creative inquiry and the understanding and management of planned change activities in social systems. Conceptual and empirical analysis and understanding at various levels (e.g., individual, group, organizational, societal) are stressed. Students also are encouraged to develop the skills necessary to use their knowledge to promote constructive change.
