Computer Resources

CWRU's computing resources include CWRUnet, a unique fiber-optic network that links more than 85 campus buildings. Through CWRUnet, users have access to a range of information resources and networks. On-campus resources include shared processors and computing services, Free-net (which provides an electronic post office, a University calendar, the UPI News Wire and more than 280 other information services), the EUCLID system (CWRU's integrated on-line library system) and Administrative Information Services' data bases and services. CWRUnet users also may access off-campus resources and services including national data communications networks (such as INTERNET, NSFnet, BITNET and CSNET) and specialized networks that link users to hundreds of other universities. CWRUnet data communications gateways provide world-wide electronic mail, file transfer and connections to supercomputing facilities.

Weatherhead Computer Laboratory

The Weatherhead School of Management Computer Laboratory was the first in the country to provide a fully-integrated network of IBM computers for M.B.A. instruction, and was a pioneer in the use of local area networking.

The laboratory is convenient for working between classes and is available in the evenings. Qualified support personnel are on duty daily. The laboratory houses 36 IBM AT-compatible computers, 3 SUN work-stations and 10 Macintosh computers, connected via a local area network to shared hard disks. The Weatherhead Intelligent Network (WIN) makes available a rich variety of software and languages, laser printers, an electronic mail system and a bulletin board.

Computer Classroom

The Weatherhead School of Management maintains a computer-supported classroom which is used not only for computer literacy instruction (in conjunction with substantial hands-on lab experience), but also for classes in subjects such as finance, operations research, accounting and marketing, where shared viewing of computer interactions and output are desired.

Group Computer-Supported Study Facilities

Many courses at the Weatherhead School involve real-world projects and team work. The school has five computer-supported study rooms which are available for use by all Weatherhead students.

Computer Familiarization Workshops

During the first week of each semester, a series of formal introductory sessions are offered by the computer lab staff. These workshops are designed to familiarize students with the operating system of the computer lab and other instruction in the use of software. Attendance is voluntary and open to all students currently registered at the Weatherhead School of Management. Many courses in the M.B.A. program require students to use the networked computers in the lab for class assignments.

The workshops include: an introduction to personal computers and the WSOM Computer Lab facilities, MS-DOS commands, special Weatherhead Intelligent Network (WIN) commands, electronic mail, course volumes, on-line network "help", word processing and Lotus 1-2-3. Approximately five to ten hours of private study are required in addition to the class sessions in order to achieve minimal proficiency in these functions.
