Career Planning and Placement

Career Planning and Placement

307 Pardee Hall
368-4446

The Career Planning and Placement Office provides career counseling and employment services to all students and alumni of the University. Counseling helps students develop an awareness of their abilities, interests, values, and educational opportunities and the impact of these elements on their career objectives.

Additionally, Career Planning and Placement assists students with job search strategies, resume and interview preparation, on-campus interviewing, and resume referrals. The AlumNET program enlists CWRU alumni as informational sources about career opportunities and job openings with their respective employers. Through on-campus recruiting and a bi-monthly bulletin of job vacancies, Career Planning and Placement maintains relationships with employers in Ohio and nationwide to assist graduates in translating their study at CWRU into exciting and rewarding careers.

The Career Resource Center contains occupational information and self-help materials to assist in seeking employment. Resources include:

  • graduate school guides and catalogs
  • internship program materials
  • occupational descriptions
  • information regarding University academic programs
  • directories and files on business, industry, research, governmental, and nonprofit organizations
  • campus recruiting schedules
  • summer and permanent employment listings
  • information concerning job prospects in major cities
In addition to these resources, a computer-based career guidance system is available for student use. The system leads the student through self-assessment exercises and generates a list of occupations consistent with the student's skills, interests, and values.

The office also houses two programs where students can integrate classroom learning with actual work experience. The Professional Practicum Program provides upperclass students studying liberal arts, sciences, or management opportunities to gain valuable preprofessional experience. Students work part-time while attending classes, and often maintain the same position full-time for the summer months.

The Cooperative Education Program (co-op) enables students to work two full-time seven-month assignments in positions consistent with their major field of study. This five-year program does not require additional coursework but merely rearranges the academic scheduling. Co-op is available to all full-time undergraduate students majoring in engineering, science (except astronomy), management, and accounting. Co-op experiences are available at companies throughout the United States.

Another service the office provides is the establishment and maintenance of credential files for graduating students and alumni. These files usually consist of recommendations and resumes which can be duplicated for employment and graduate school applications. There is a basic registration fee of $10 for this service.

Information is also available concerning standardized tests such as the Graduate Record Examination, the Graduate Management Admission Test, and the National Teachers Examination.
