UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The goal of the Women's Studies Program is to prepare students to analyze issues of gender construction, the roles and representations of women, and patriarchal or sexist social structures. Women's Studies' scope includes the study of women across time and across cultures, but also the construction and operation of gender in all areas of society, and therefore the construction and operation of masculinity as well as femininity. The course of study is designed to introduce students to different disciplinary methods and theoretical approaches to the study of women, gender and feminism.

Minor

The program in women's studies offers an undergraduate minor.

The minor calls for eighteen hours of course work, or six classes. One of these must be the required methodology class, HSTY 365/ENGL 365W Introduction to Gender Studies. While students are free to choose the other five courses for the minor, they must do so with the advice and consent of the Program Adviser in order to assure a broad program of study.
