Professor of History
The Department of Philosophy and the Program in History of Technology and Science together offer an undergraduate major in the history and philosophy of science and technology. The purpose of the major is to develop a humanistic understanding of the nature and development of technology and science through the combined use of philosophical and historical methods. The major provides a foundation for graduate study in a range of academic disciplines and for careers in business, medicine, law, public policy, and science journalism. It also may be profitably combined with a program in one of the sciences. Within the major, a student may seek an emphasis on technology, physical science, or biological and medically-related science.
The history and philosophy of science and technology major requires 33 credit hours from courses in philosophy and in history of technology and science. In addition, there is a science requirement of at least 15 hours of science and/or engineering courses.
Required are PHIL 101, 201, and 303; HSTY 390 or PHIL 390; and four of the following five courses: PHIL 302, HSTY 201, 202, 251, 252. Three more PHIL and HSTY courses in the history of technology and science at the 300 level or above must be taken, only two of which may be from the same department.
Science Requirement: A coherent sequence of at least 15 hours of science and/or engineering courses, 6 hours of which must normally be at the 300 level or above is required. The intent is to provide a sequence roughly equivalent to a minor in science or engineering based on the Western Reserve Core. Any science minor will satisfy this requirement.
There is no minor or sequence in history and philosophy of science and technology. Students inclined to seek such a minor or sequence are encouraged to do so in either history of technology and science or philosophy. Students who major in the history and philosophy of science and technology are not permitted to take a second major in philosophy or to minor either in philosophy or in history of technology and science.
